Modern Romance

Being relatively young, I still have the energy to ask the bland questions: Why should Valentine’s Day matter to us? In this, I mean the Valentine’s Day of you and me---the general, stodgy adults---since I think we can agree that children could never have any objection to candies and little cards and fun days at school. As it’s a time to acknowledge and reward Romance, let’s also give some thought to love-in-actuality and what endures. Now being in a position to look back some, I can say that I’ve forgotten nearly all of my Valentine’s Day gifts through the years. I’ve certainly forgotten all the flowers and candies and trinkets. I’ve forgotten most of the books and records.

Tiny Kitten

I've been trying to be good about finishing up long-lingering projects this year.  I tend to get distracted by new patterns and yarns that come across my desk, so I constantly have a pile of projects with unwoven ends or half-knitted sleeves. I found this little guy in a plastic shoebox, just missing his ears:

Tyler

(Note: Our wonderful Purchasing Director Teri is one of the biggest cheerleaders for Brava - here's her experience with it! Stashbusting with the Beekeeper’s Quilt

I bought The Beekeeper's Quilt pattern from Tiny Owl's Magic Attic back in October and have quietly been working on hexipuffs between other knitting projects ever since. I've been using all my fingering weight odds and ends leftover from all the sock projects, mittens and Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi critters that I made over the holidays. This morning I decided to sit down and see if I could identify all the Knit Picks yarn that has gone into this project so far... it was fun trying to retrace my knitting! Do you spot them all?

Cozy Toast Wrap in Capretta

It's the time of year for shifty, cool weather and I'm definitely bundled up all the time. When I'm knitting I have a blanket over my shoulders, when I go outside there's always a hat on my noggin, and even when I'm working at my desk I have a scarf (or two!) on. This time around I knew that I wanted to knit a super cozy cowl that I could wear outside to the market and inside around the office. Something substantial. I spotted the Toast Wrap over on Ravelry and had that little fluttery heart moment when I know I've found the perfect project.

Felted slippers… perfect for these cold winter days!

When it gets cold outside, there's nothing better than to snuggle your feet in a cozy pair of felted slippers!  They are so toasty warm! I have made many as gifts and for myself.  Wool of the Andes  is the perfect yarn for these projects, and my preferred yarn of choice. I used worsted weight for this project.  This last week I finished a pair for a good friend of mine using the Fiber Trends Felted Clogs pattern. (I love this pattern!) They have a double sole which felts nice and thick. Before felting, these slippers look enormous!

Sugarbunny Scalliwag

Do you have a favorite hat that, no matter how many hats you have, you always grab it first?  I certainly do, it's my version of Erica Jackofsky's Scalliwag. (that's Erica's version shown there - not mine!)

Weaving Take #2

A few months ago, I finally got the nerve to try my hand at weaving. I first was intrigued by weaving when Kelley started to prepare the samples for her Weaving with a Ridig Heddle video class. I don't know why, but for some reason I had it set in my mind that weaving was complicated and time consuming. And don't get me wrong - weaving isn't some I am able to start on a whim as easily as casting on some stitches for a knitting project. The preparation is a bit time consuming and takes a bit of finessing, but once you are actually weaving the entire process goes along fairly fast.

Iceland Wins!

So, In my post Fana, Faroe or Fair Isle? I asked for your opinions on what my next project should be. After reading through the comments, I realized that I was really captivated by the Icelandic yoked pullovers that were suggested. Not only were the geometric yoke patterns really interesting, but I realized as well that it would be a perfect excuse to do a stranding project with more than two colors in a round! As soon as I got home on that Thursday, I wound up my yarn and cast on.
