Together We Create!

Since the Knit Picks staff have all been at home these past few weeks, we, of course, have been knitting and crocheting up a storm! We all have different reasons for it – first and foremost, it’s something that we obviously love to do, but it also helps us stay connected to each other and to our online community, even if we can’t be out & about. So we thought we’d share some of our projects with you and would ...

Craft 2 Give Back
The “Craft to Give Back” Wrap-up!

Over the last two months, one of the first things I did upon waking up every morning was to eagerly check the Instagram hashtag #craft2giveback. Akin to watching the gift pile under the Christmas tree grow, I tallied with great joy the burgeoning number of handmade projects submitted to our campaign to raise money for the United Nations Refugee Agency. I was absolutely blown away by your generosity. 1,791 projects were submitted to local charities - that's thousands and thousands of hours of love!

Bridge Pedal 2015

Many of us here are avid bike riders - it's easy to do, living in the Portland OR/Vancouver WA area! Each year, the city of Portland shuts down the 10 (now 11) bridges over the Willamette River for bikes to safely ride across for Providence Bridge Pedal. All proceeds go to health and wellness charities around the area, including a portion to fund concussion and neurocognitive testing, known as ImPact testing. Several of us have done it over past couple of years but this year, we put together the official Knit Picks team of employees and spouses - complete with cute shirts! All of us signed up for the 11 Bridge course, so this photo was after we rode between 30-35 miles in the hot sun and we're all a little giddy and sweaty! We had a great time, even with some course issues.

Charity Spotlight: Knots of Love

We're focusing on charity crafting this month, with the release of our new book Helping Hands: Made With Love, Given With Heart. You can buy the book (on sale for just $5.99!), or download the ebook for free! It contains six patterns in both knit and crochet, that are perfect for donating to a charity who could really use your help. In the book, we highlight some worthy campaigns, one of them being Knots of Love. We wanted to learn a bit more about them, so we asked Christine, from the organization, to answer some questions. Click through to read all about it!

Knit Picks and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

You've seen it all over your Facebook freinds, Twttier feeds and the news. Celebrities, sports figures and everyday people are taking part. It's the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - where you are are challenged to make a donation to ALSA.org and post a video dumping a bucket of ice water over your head. It seemed so silly at first, but has gained in momentum and the last total I saw was 90+ million dollars raised to fight ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig disease). This week, Knit Picks and the rest of the Crafts Americana team at Vancouver WA office were happy to take part, as ALS has affected members of our families. We made a donation for everyone who took part (22 staff members), along with personal donations.

A time for giving

Every year we get questions about what we do with the knitted items after we photograph them for the catalog & website.  Well, once a year we go through them and donate most them to charity - we prefer to donate to local charities, to give back to the communities where we all live & work and where there is so much need.  I put together the items this year and it seemed like a perfect time - while the Portland/Vancouver area weather tends to be mild, it has been very cold the last few nights and there is a great need for warm items. My first stop was the Portland Rescue Mission.
