Elizabeth Zimmerman's Opinionated Knitter was one of the first books I bought as a knitter. I loved the photos, stories about the various school houses she lived in and more specifically, the story behind her Baby Surprise Jacket. Fast forward six years and I had still not knit a single thing out of The Opinionated Knitter. However, after years of gazing longingly at my favorite pattern book, I was finally able to rally my courage and make my own "Baby Surprise Jacket". |

Warning: more baby clothes ahead! I'm due June 17th, so I thought I should slow down with all of my 100% wool projects for the kiddo unless they were sized a bit larger. Still, I wanted to make some super-tiny newborn clothes, so I pulled out some Simply Cotton Sport from my stash. |

I have had Sara E. Kellner's Vintage Rabbit pattern in my Ravelry queue for ages while I waited to have enough of just the right color yarn for it. So, when I discovered a mini stash of Wool of the Andes Worsted tucked away in a basket: two balls of Painted Desert and one ball of Oyster Heather I already had the perfect project in mind! |

This project has been a long time in the making! I dyed my fiber last year using Greener Shades dyes, then spun it into four different 250g skeins of bulky weight 2-ply, and now I've finally transformed it all into a finished object. When I'm stash busting or using up unlabeled yarn, I tend to create my own patterns that are a) extremely basic and b) allow me to change plans mid-stream in order to work around yarn shortages. For this project, I decided to do a basic crochet ripple afghan - I wanted something soothing that let me really enjoy the texture and colors of my handspun without concentrating on a difficult stitch pattern. I also planned on creating stripes of varying widths so that I had more options for using up the majority of my yarn. |

A couple of years ago my granddaughter, at the age of 2 weeks, was admitted to the NICU unit at our local hospital, where she spent the next two weeks. She's now a happy, healthy 2 1/2 year old, but it was really scary back then. My daughter spent almost all her time by her side. One day, my daughter was given a knitted hat & bootie set for Kalyn. It was a heartwarming experience for her and a comfort during a difficult time. That's when I realized a need and that I would like to pay it forward for someone else. I've been using left over cotton & acrylic yarns to create the baby items. I don't remember which yarn was used with this set, but it is so darling. |

Remember my post from a few weeks back where I talked about my new crochet project? Well, now I can show it to you! This is my completed Bullseye Blanket! I'm very excited that I finally finished it - it took a while, but was so worth it. |

When I first started knitting with my handspun yarn, I can't tell you how many times I've wished for a magical label marked with yarn weight, recommended needle size, yardage, and washing instructions. Over time, I've gotten better about documenting my handspun as I create it; when I don't take notes, though, I have to just wing it! For a recent cross-country trip I decided to give myself a little challenge - I packed nothing but 4 skeins of handspun yarn and an assortment of needle tips and cables. The four skeins I chose were finished more recently, so I hadn't had time to measure the yardage, weigh them, or even match them up with other yarn for projects. |

There's a lot to be said for gift yarns. When my friend went walking along the knitting shop row in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she bought a lovely skein of hand-dyed, ribbon yarn. It took a long time for me to find something to make out of the precious skein. I wanted a scarf or shawlette that I could knit without worrying about the yardage. |

I've been knitting for quite some time now (going on seven years! Phew!) and I've only successfully knit two sweaters, both of which were separated by years of socks, mittens and other smaller projects. It was always so hard to take the plunge and invest in enough yarn for a full, cozy sweater. This past summer I found the Larch Cardigan by Amy Christoffers and fell head over heels for it. The color and high collar really caught my eye! I fussed over which yellow and which yarn I would knit my new dream cardigan in and eventually settled on Stroll Sport in Mustard to give it a nice, soft drape and so that I'd be able to machine wash it. I set to work and finished all the pieces within two weeks! But... then came the sleeves. |

I've been holding off on posting about it publicly, but once I saw the pictures from our de-stash party I figured I could start telling folks that I'm pregnant. Dan and I are expecting our first child this June, a boy, and we're super excited. |
