Podcast 256: Something for Everybody!

Podcast 256 has something for everybody! We hear from Knit Picks' own Alison Backus about our new collection, "Knits for Everybody", with basic patterns you'll go back to again and again. The sweater pattern from this book is designed by Katy Banks, who talks on this podcast about her design process, and left handed knitting a whole different way. We'll also talk to Vera Brosgol, author and illustrator of the new children's picture book, "Leave Me Alone", (pictured above) about drawing, knitting, and being left alone to do it all. 3 easy ways to listen...

My Favorite Crochet Book of All Time

Book Sale is on! Do you love new knitting and crochet books? I love them. I find so much inspiration in books, whether they be collections of sweaters and accessories, books on new (or old) techniques, or books about...nonsense. I love making nonsense! By that, I mean mostly impractical items to keep or give away but that are pretty much guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of people who see them. When I found in Twinkie Chan's newest book, "Crochet Abode a la Mode", I started making just that. It might be my favorite craft book ever, and so far, I've made four projects from it. Check them out!

New! Complete Yarn Guide 2016

You may have noticed that our catalog got little makeover a few months ago. As soon as we started planning the new look, we realized that having a complementary book of all of our current yarns would be a great idea, since they're no longer included in the catalog. So as our graphic designer, I was in charge of putting it together. With hundreds of items, it was a lot of information to wrangle into a beautiful, cohesive package. I wanted to be sure that it was easy to use and that all of the photos were color-corrected so they'd be as accurate as possible for those consulting the yarn guide for color reference. I know how important that is for any knitter or crocheter, especially for projects with multiple colors, like Fair Isle. In fact, Knit Picks staff has used the yarn guide ourselves in several collection planning meetings for that very reason.

Toasty Toes – Socks for All Seasons

Socks are my addiction. Throughout the year, I always have a pair on my needles, no matter the weather. They are perfect to travel with, usually only take one skein of yarn, and can be worked on even in the heat of the summer when having a sweater or blanket on your lap would be miserable. Our Hawthorne yarn lines are my favorite; in fact, I can't remember the last pair I knit that wasn't in Hawthorne and now we highlight this beautiful yarn in our new collection Toasty Toes!

Spinning!

My first love, knitting was quickly followed by dabbling in spinning with a little drop spindle I picked up at my local yarn store in college. I was immediately smitten with the idea that I could spin my very own yarn right there in my dorm room and the rest is history! Now, I have a Sonata Spinning Wheel in my craft room, several drop spindles and a funny little vintage spinning wheel that I can tote with me to the park (and yes, that's definitely a thing I've been known to do occasionally). Now that I've started weaving in a serious way, I can't wait to spin yarn specifically to use on my loom too! Whether you're a beginner spinner, never tried your hand at it or are looking for an interesting book to add to your spinning library, we've got you covered with a round up of my favorite tools and books.
