Take the chill off with the Glacier Bay collection!

Nothing like a foggy November morning to remind me that winter is nearly upon us! Here in the Pacific Northwest, we've had a few frosty mornings already. This is just the kind of weather that inspired my new Glacier Bay collection! This collection features six accessories that are stylish and cozy.

My (almost finished!) Diadem cowl

When the samples of Diadem first arrived in our office, the thing I remember most was the feeling of being completely in awe of the colors! Immediately, I went into project brainstorming mode: grabbing colors, making notes of pattern possibilities, rearranging color palettes, piling up stitch dictionaries. Diadem in Tourmaline There were just so many good possibilities! And finally, after many piles of mini swatches (both knit and crochet), I settled on making a cowl with a simple stitch pattern to really show off the ever-so-subtle shade shifts.

Introducing Lilleknappen!

I'm a huge fan of details, especially when it comes to finishing projects. I like good, proper hems, perfectly coordinated buttons, and fine stitching along a steek. Even more than that, though, I love authentic touches. That's why I'm so thrilled that we're carrying authentic Norwegian pewter buttons and clasps and Swedish cotton ribbons from Lilleknappen! I've been waiting for this day for quite some time, actually. I found Lilleknappen when I was looking for good quality pewter clasps several years ago, and we've finally been able to add their fantastic products to our lineup. That means that the pile of sweaters that have been waiting for trimming can finally be finished! (for two years my favorite Icelandic sweater has been held shut with a safety pin!)

Bringing Nature Home

I'm a huge fan of nature, as I'm sure those of you who have read my other blogs will know! Walking through a sunny field or a lush forest is an experience that I treasure. But during the colder months, it's hard to really enjoy too much of the outdoors before getting chilly. That's why in my latest collection, Hearth and Home, I bring the beauty of nature indoors!

City Tweed Collection

As the coordinator of our IDP collections, the biggest "problem" with my job is the fact that I am constantly surrounded by patterns I want to make RIGHT NOW. Case in point: last month we released Reclaimed (where I immediately cast on for Addison - I'm about halfway through the body) and the Wool of the Andes Collection (where I have the yarn already for Insulate). Now we've come out with probably my favorite collection to date - I want to knit everything!

It’s back to school time – don’t forget your Geometry!

Well, the days of summer are drawing to a close - it's time to go back to school. My favorite subjects in school were science, art and math - all of which are reflected in my latest collection, Geometric! This is a 6-pattern collection that draws upon ideals from geometry, modern art and architecture. Each pattern features a graphic detail that stands out against otherwise simple knitting.

Tatting mistakes
Tatting learning curve

Wow! I had an interesting weekend with my balls of Curio and tatting instruction books. My hands might remember the motions for tatting but my mind has certainly filed away the technical understanding way back in a mental file drawer. I'm not looking for excuses for my high learning curve but I have to say the tatting world is a bit complicit.

Rediscovering the joys of shuttle tatting

There's a lot to be said for a craft that can fit in a pocket. That was certainly the appeal twenty-five years ago when I was doing a lot of hiking and camping. When I returned to our Vancouver office for the summer, I fell in love with our new crochet thread line - Curio. The colors are absolutely stunning. While I was admiring Curio, Kim mentioned that we had also picked up a tatting shuttle and a couple of instruction books. That certainly got my attention! I couldn't believe tatting had found its way back into my life.
