Congratulations to our winners!

Thank you for all of your entries in our Custom Crochet Contest!   I randomly chose our three winners: Winner #1 Ginny! Ginny's comment: "That looks like a great book! I've been crocheting for years but I've never made a sweater." Winner #2 Sarah! Sarah's comment: "I've tried making a crochet sweater, once. It didn't go so well. Maybe this is the book I need to encourage me to foray into the depths of sweater making again.: Winner #3 Lisa! Lisa's comment: "Beautiful sweaters! I've never made a crocheted garment, but these sweaters are original and creative enough for me to give it a try." Congratulations!  I hope we'll be seeing some beautiful crochet sweaters from this book!

A sale, and a full-sized Full Circle blanket

Earth Day isn't until April 22nd, but we wanted to do something for the whole month of April to celebrate it.  Full Circle, our Special Reserve recycled wool yarn, is on sale for 10% off from 4/1 until 4/30.  After the sale is finished, Knit Picks will donate an additional 10% of sales to the Arbor Day Foundation.  A win for you, and a win for the environment! Full Circle is one of my favorite yarns to work with - it's a lofty single ply, the colors are richly heathered, and the finished fabric is soft yet sturdy with a pleasant wooliness to it.  After seeing the color samples arrive at the office, I decided that I wanted to crochet a blanket using Full Circle Worsted in Cardinal, Mocha, and Latte.

A Springtime Beret

With the weather finally getting warmer (er, minus the crazy snowstorm that I found myself driving in last week), my mind has been turning to some lightweight projects.  I decided it was time to make myself a nice little hat out of one our new Chroma colors

More baby things!

Like Alison, I've been working on some baby things!  Two of my closest friends are having a baby in May & I'm so excited for them.  I wrote about my decision making back in January and wanted to be sure I shared the final result with you. I was originally planning on making a log cabin style blanket with University of Oregon colors - yellow, green, white & black - since we all grew up in Eugene & are big U of O fans.  I ended up ordering Swish Worsted because I liked those colors the best & got started! But then after a few rounds, I realized how mind numbingly dull it was to knit - and slow! I had just finished up my Bullseye Blanket and was really in the mood to crochet something else.  And then when I saw Alison's gorgeous Ripple Blanket, I thought that might be a great project instead.  I happened to mentioned it on Twitter and Linda Permann had an even better suggestion - Lyn's Round Ripple Baby Afghan!

Finished Crochet Ripple Blanket

This project has been a long time in the making!  I dyed my fiber last year using Greener Shades dyes, then spun it into four different 250g skeins of bulky weight 2-ply, and now I've finally transformed it all into a finished object. When I'm stash busting or using up unlabeled yarn, I tend to create my own patterns that are a) extremely basic and b) allow me to change plans mid-stream in order to work around yarn shortages.  For this project, I decided to do a basic crochet ripple afghan - I wanted something soothing that let me really enjoy the texture and colors of my handspun without concentrating on a difficult stitch pattern.  I also planned on creating stripes of varying widths so that I had more options for using up the majority of my yarn.

Crocheting with Chroma

Remember my post from a few weeks back where I talked about my new crochet project?  Well, now I can show it to you! This is my completed Bullseye Blanket!  I'm very excited that I finally finished it - it took a while, but was so worth it.

Modern Romance

Being relatively young, I still have the energy to ask the bland questions: Why should Valentine’s Day matter to us? In this, I mean the Valentine’s Day of you and me---the general, stodgy adults---since I think we can agree that children could never have any objection to candies and little cards and fun days at school. As it’s a time to acknowledge and reward Romance, let’s also give some thought to love-in-actuality and what endures. Now being in a position to look back some, I can say that I’ve forgotten nearly all of my Valentine’s Day gifts through the years. I’ve certainly forgotten all the flowers and candies and trinkets. I’ve forgotten most of the books and records.

Gifts for the Interminably Picky

I have a few people in my life that aren’t keen on wearing crocheted goods and their objections vary quite a bit. Some think crocheting looks “hippie-ish”, others think it makes you look like a doily. Whatever the reason, it creates a problem for gift-giving. Since I’m still warming-up my skills after years of disuse, I generally stick to giving simple hats and scarves; they require very little resources and, more importantly, tend to actually go into use. I say this with very, very great displeasure: No one has ever used any of the potholders I’ve crocheted for holding a hot item. So, if I don’t want to give what’s tantamount to wall art, I turn to cozies. Of course not all cozies are created equal; they range from the truly utilitarian to the truly ludicrous/endearing. For my purposes, I think a cell phone cover strikes a nice balance.
