My First Weaving Project

My very first weaving project is done! Just yesterday afternoon, I took a bit of time to put the finishing touches on my weaving project by braiding the ends and tying them off. Although my edges aren't quite even and there are a few flubs here and there, I have to say I am quite pleased with my first attempt at weaving with a rigid heddle loom. And the colors are simply stunning, I love the way there are bright pops of teal and lime green, but overall, the colors seem so well balanced.

Weaving & Color

If you have been following along with our podcasts, you might have heard Kelley chatting with me about rigid heddle looms. After working with Kelley on creating video tutorials for weaving with a rigid heddle loom, I was instantly fascinated by the color possibilities! I have never worked with a rigid heddle before, but I am in the beginning stages of planning out my first project.

We are lumberjacks & we’re ok!

(with apologies to Monty Python) We all hope you are having a great Halloween!  Many of us here at the office love to dress up on Halloween and some of us couldn't resist going with a theme - Lumberjacks! When Joanna Rankin's pattern for Beardo came across my desk, we all thought it was one of the most fun patterns we'd seen & made plans right then & there to make them for Halloween.

Project ideas?

I recently finished spinning a bunch of the roving that I had dyed with Greener Shades dyes back in February.  I was trying to work my way through a bin of older fiber before I allowed myself to play with my new goodies - thinking about it, it's kind of weird that I create so many rules for myself while working on tasks that are supposed to be purely recreational.   Anyway, I ended up pulling out several braids of dyed Merino that seemed the most fun, then spun them each into a lofty 2-ply bulky weight yarn.  I had split each braid in half and then predrafted the fiber without splitting it further, resulting in long color repeats for each single ply.  When I plied them together, I got a nice barberpole effect that should work up as subtly shifting stripes.

REFERENCE-DRAFT

So for the blog, it’s pretty easy.  This is the code:   Stash blog ?media=blogpost   So when you want to link to something in the blog to our site, you would add the code to the end of the address.  For instance:   This is the website address for palette:   https://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Palette_Yarn__D5420132.html   So then you would add the code to the end, so it would look like this:   https://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Palette_Yarn__D5420132.html?media=blogpost   And that’s what you would paste in the link box when talking about Palette in a blog post.       The only odd thing that would happen is if there is already a ? in the web address.  For instance:   This is the regular address for the Uptown Chic eBook   https://www.knitpicks.com/cfPatterns/EBook_Display.cfm?id=75019D   You can’t have more than one ? in the web address, so you’ll change the second one to &.    So it would look like this:   https://www.knitpicks.com/cfPatterns/EBook_Display.cfm?id=75019D&media=blogpost

Fingerless Mitts – My new fashion statement

I am rarely not wearing a scarf. If the weather is chilly, it will be a warm, handknit beauty. If the weather is warm, it will be chiffon, silk or even cotton. Oftentimes something I've found at World Market or Anthropologie. I only have a couple of scarves from Anthropologie because they are a bit spendy. But, I find that I wear those scarves a lot. Scarves have been my signature style for as long as I can remember. I think it has something to do with my being so Irish - read "pale". I've never been fond of the large expanse of pasty white from my forehead down to whatever top I am wearing. I also appreciate how easily a scarf can pull an outfit together. And, expand my wardrobe when I'm traveling.

It’s beginning to look a lot like….

Holiday knitting season! Yes, yes, I know, it's still September. But, if you're planning on knitting some holiday gifts, now is a pretty good time to start! Now, I don't know about you, but I think I've knit just about every type of thing I can think of as gifts, and I'm sure my mom only needs so many scarves. So, what to do? How about giving some lovely ornaments and decorations from the Winter Wonderful kit? This kit includes 15 patterns for everything from a Mitten and Sled (that also function as gift card holder!) to a life-sized Poinsettia and adorable stuffed Chickadee and Polar Bear. Or, make a cute yarn basket for your favorite knitting friend...

My Grandmother’s Knitting Book Signing Recap

Last week, we posted about the book signing event for My Grandmother's Knitting that was being put on by Andersen Fiber Works in Gresham, Oregon. A bunch of us from Knit Picks were able to attend the event and it was such a wonderful evening! Not only did I get to visit a new yarn store, but I also got a chance to hang out with other knitters and see Jen who does the Hanks in the Hood batts for Knit Picks. For me, the evening started off by wondering around and admiring all of the yarn and fiber. Then, we moved upstairs to see Larissa Brown, Chrissy Gardiner, Leigh Radford, Joan McGowan Micheal, and Stevanie Pico for the book signing of My Grandmother's Knitting. Kelley (and Xena), Alison, Hannah and myself found a cozy spot to settle in and work on a bit of knitting as the karaoke was getting started.
