My Favorite Independent Designer Photos

Some of my favorite days at work are photo shoot days. Every catalog cycle we log anywhere between 1-4 location shoots and 2-5 in-house studio days where we shoot tools, garments, yarn, books and all sorts of other things that crop up along the way. Each kind of shoot has this moment when everything just clicks and Amy and I can get that “perfect shot” that was exactly what we had in mind. Every once in a while we have a shot that totally exceeds our expectations and makes me actually clap my hands and gasp when I see the image on the screen.

I wanted to take a minute and shine the spotlight on some of my favorite photos that we’ve taken recently that maybe didn’t make it into the catalog or are Independent Designer’s patterns that I’m especially proud of. Enjoy!

The Light Basics Collection is Truly Timeless

Oh how I LOVE Kerin’s new Light Basics collection. I can very clearly remember the minute we unpacked all of the knit samples in the office. As each garment came out we all reached out to touch the beautiful, springy fabric of each garment. I definitely gave the Light Basics Pullover an extra squeeze and even a little hug to with a big grin on my face because that Capretta (as I’ve said before) just knits up into SUCH A GORGEOUS fabric!

Each piece in this collection is designed to be a simple, easy to knit and timeless addition to your wardrobe.

IDP is 3 Years Old!

3 years ago this week, the first IDP patterns went up on the site! We started with around 20 patterns and a handful of designers; since then the Independent Designer Partnership Program has grown to nearly 2000 patterns and over 550 designers! Wow!

I’m so excited I get to be a part of this. Alison came up with the idea in fall 2009 and I came aboard the Knit Picks team in November. My first month was spent working round the clock to make sure everything was ready to go! Since then, this has been my main job at Knit Picks and I honestly couldn’t be happier – I’ve loved getting to know the designers and helping them bring their patterns to you. We’ve grown the IDP to include kits, ebooks, and our newest venture, IDP Designer Collections. Plus I can’t wait for you all to see what our next IDP projects is – believe me, you are going to love it!

Since we’re celebrating our anniversary, I’ve been asking my coworkers to pick their favorite IDP patterns. While it was like pulling teeth (“I like so many of them!”) they finally narrowed their choices down.

To be honest, I also had problems picking a favorite pattern, but I finally went with the one I’ve made many times – the Boo Bear Hat by Terri Kruse.

To Do List

Oh goodness, my holiday knitting queue just keeps getting larger! I spend a
little bit of time every day trawling Ravelry and our library here for
good patterns to knit (or crochet now!) up for everyone on my list and I
thought I’d share a few of my favorites today.

Summer knitting – hot water bottle covers?

Yes! Now stay with me and you will appreciate my logic.

Hot water bottle covers are small, portable knitting projects. Not heavy in your lap and easy to tote around while you are on vacation or just heading out for a picnic.

You can use up bits of yarn from projects you knit last fall and winter.

There are tons of fun designs – knitting and felting.

And, they make phenomenal gifts! Just be sure to include a bottle with the cover.

You can buy the bottles in the first aid section of your local pharmacy or even on Amazon!
