Knitting in Public

Did you craft in public this past weekend? We held a lovely get together in Colonel Summers Park in Portland, OR. There was free yarn and books, prize baskets, lots of chatting and crafting, and unfortunately, a good amount of rain. Nevermind! We headed under the park’s picnic shelter and carried on. No, those aren’t our wet socks on the line, but samples from Toasty Toes, all in a row!

Learn to Knit a Lacy Spa Cloth

Lace is really hard for me. I’ve tried it a few times and had no good results. I’m resolving to try again, however, and in doing so, I’m going to start with the basics. As much as I would love to try the patterns in Joyful Lace, and go forth with our new 100% silk yarn, Luminance, I will start small. So I’m going to cast on with our cotton yarn Dishie, and try to knit a Lacy Spa Cloth.

With a super repeatable pattern that I can memorize really quickly, I think this will be a fast project where I can repeat my yarn overs and get used to how things look on the needles, before I progress to larger patterns. The texture reminds me of those string market bags you see at the Farmer’s Market all summer long. Maybe I’ll try my hand at one of those, next!

World Wide Knit In Public Day

Saturday, June 18 2016

Better living through stitching together.

Did you know that this Saturday is World Wide Knit In Public Day? This event started in 2005 as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. From founder Danielle Landes: “Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This is a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for people like you. Who knows you might even bump into your neighbor!”

New! Complete Yarn Guide 2016
yarn-guide-cover-image
You may have noticed that our catalog got little makeover a few months ago. As soon as we started planning the new look, we realized that having a complementary book of all of our current yarns would be a great idea, since they’re no longer included in the catalog. So as our graphic designer, I was in charge of putting it together. With hundreds of items, it was a lot of information to wrangle into a beautiful, cohesive package. I wanted to be sure that it was easy to use and that all of the photos were color-corrected so they’d be as accurate as possible for those consulting the yarn guide for color reference. I know how important that is for any knitter or crocheter, especially for projects with multiple colors, like Fair Isle. In fact, Knit Picks staff has used the yarn guide ourselves in several collection planning meetings for that very reason.
