Summer is officially in full swing (even if we’re getting a cloudy day here and there still)! And for this month, we were inspired by all things nautical, weekend trips to the beach and stripes on just about everything. It’s really fun to see whats new and exciting in the world of yarn – although I admit it’s also distracting… I get inspired and all I want to do is play with yarn instead of work! Read more »Back in the day, before Photoshop was my artistic tool of choice, I loved to paint. Oil, acrylic, watercolor and charcoal delightfully muddied up my bedroom. These days, my home is cluttered with a different method of creative expression: yarn dyeing!
I started with a just a few colors in Greener Shades Dye, several skeins of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash Bare yarn and this trusty guide: Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece. I’m not gonna lie; I was intimidated by the whole process. I felt the ‘blank canvas’ paralysis of days gone by returning. However, after I took the plunge (or rather, my first skein took the plunge), the fear vanished and the fun began!

For me, summer is about trying new things. I like new stitch patterns and new yarns, but most of all I like new crafts in general. In the past, I’ve devoted summers to needle felting or dyeing. This summer, I’m learning to weave! I have a small rigid heddle loom and I can’t wait to make scarves and placemats and pillowcases for everyone I know. In my dreams, my Christmas list will be complete by the time the pumpkins are ripe.
