A Dangerously Cute IDP Pattern!

So on December 1, 2009, we launched the Independent Designer Partnership Program …which means it’s one year old this week!  I’ve been so excited
to see this program grow & grow – as of today, there are over 700
patterns now in the program. It looks like it’s been a big hit with both
designers & customers, as each month we get over 100 pattern
submissions and the pattern sales are going through the roof (we sold
over 11,000 IDP patterns in November alone!).

And not only that, we added our 300th designer to the program this
week and I’m thrilled because she is has been one of my favorite
deisgners for a long time – Rebecca Danger!

Crochet and IDP

One of my favorite things I’ve learned this year is how to crochet!
I’ve always been surrounded by women (and men!) who crochet more than knit, but for
some reason I couldn’t pick it up – I had some sort of mental block.
That ended back in May when my mom & I took a rainy holiday on the
Oregon Coast – finally for like 20th she tried so show me, something in
my brain clicked and I’ve been crocheting up a storm since then!  And
since the IDP Crochet pattern selection has grown so much, I’ve been in heaven.

My first big crochet project was the Adva Scarf by Lauren Osbonre.  This is her version:

Knitting with a little help from my friends…

I finished my first lace project!

I was inspired by Franklin Habit’s Night Cap on Knitty.

So Alison helped me alter the pattern to make a scarf, knitting straight instead of in the round and helped me choose yarn and needle size.

Alison said to show off the beautiful pattern I should choose a yarn with sheen. She also said I could get away with a worsted, so I chose Shine. Here’s where the problem came in. I found some Shine in my stash that I had received from our stash swap party. The color was Sea Scape. I happily started knitting away. I came to the end of my second ball and went to order more, only to discover that we haven’t carried that color since 2007. Oops.
After asking advice from a couple people …

Veteran’s Day Knitting

Bob’s youngest son, Jonathon, is a new officer in the Marine Corps. He spent a week in Portland before reporting to his base in California. Walter certainly enjoyed the rides on Jon’s shoulders.
And, Xena was pleased to see him as well.

Having Jon visit gave me a renewed sense of urgency for my Socks for Soldiers knitting. Just to give you a quick update – the military has changed their color guidelines. Unfortunately, the Marines are sticking to black, but the other services are using Drab Green (Sarge – Essential) or a Dusty Tan (Buckskin – Essential).
Right now I am working my way up the legs of socks in Sarge. Yep, “up”. I’m trying out Tina’s free knitting pattern for Two At Once, Toe Up, Magic Loop Socks. I haven’t gotten Kim’s approval for this pattern so stick to …

Harry Potter House colors

I have to admit that I’m not the hugest Harry Potter fan in my family. My dad and my sister have both read all of the books, and I’ve only read, um, 2 chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. BUT I have seen all the movies. Since my dad is such a big fan, I’m thinking of knitting him something from Charmed Knits for either Christmas or his birthday in March (his birthday is looking likelier and likelier as Christmas gets closer and closer!) Picking colors for a lot of the projects in the book is pretty easy since Alison Hansel used lots of Knit Picks yarns, but since we’ve introduced some new colors, I’ve been thinking a bit about which yarns I’d actually choose.
This post on Ravelry was the final push I needed to compile a list of all the Knit …

Lace and Socks

I’ve been away so long! I think I may finally be caught up after my vacation, so can post a few pictures of what I’ve been working on. The Myrtle Leaf Shawl went with me to Italy and really helped the airplane and layover hours pass pleasantly. It’s getting a little big to carry around now, so I found an old plate box to keep it in. I love cool containers! I’m about a third of the way through the second hank of Shadow lace yarn. I’m just going to make the Shawl two hanks long and then use a third hank for the border.

Pattern: Myrtle Leaf Shawl from Victorian Lace Today
Yarn: Shadow in Campfire, a discontinued color from my stash
Needles: US 3 Harmony Wood 24″ fixed circular
And, here are my meeting socks. It looks like I’ve been …

I know I’m in trouble when…

….my Affirmation Marker is larger than the beginning of my Jolly Green Socks for Socks for Soldiers. This time I am going to use Tina’s pattern for Two At A Time Toe Up Socks. I love her garter stitch heel that extends under the heel. I’m going to add a special touch – double strand the garter stitch section for extra padding! I can tell you that it is much easier to knit with Sarge than black yarn! <

My hoodie looks like an alien

I am sooo close to being done with the regular knitting. I still have to cut the steeks, do the neck/hood ribbing, sew up the hem, weave in ends, etc. The deep v-neck steek makes the neck look so much smaller than it will be after I cut it open. It certainly doesn’t look like it could fit an adult human right now, but maybe an alien..? My alien says hello.
Pattern: Apres Surf Hoodie from Interweave Knits Summer 2008
Yarn: Shine Sport Sand (discontinued color from my stash)
Needles: Knit Picks US 1 (2.50mm) 32″ nickel plated fixed circular for the body and two 24″ nickel plated fixed circulars for the sleeves
And, here are my meeting socks. Getting close too. I only knit on them during work meetings – maybe two more staff meetings worth of knitting – or one staff meeting and two podcasts. What …

It’s starting to look like a sweater

I realized last night that I DO have to steek the v-neck because, since I am knitting it in the round, I started my rounds under the left arm. But, if I were to knit to the beginning of the neckline, then turn and knit back, I would end up on different pattern rows in that next row – the front left would be one pattern row ahead of the rest of the sweater. Aaargh! I prefer steeking anyway, but I’m a little worried about the cotton/Modal yarn – I’ll have to sew the steeks really well before I cut.
Oh, and I’m doing half raglan, half saddle shoulder shaping. I’m doing raglan decreases until I’ve decreased out two pattern repeats; then I’ll knit even until it’s at the point to take the remaining sleeve repeats across the top of the shoulder as a saddle …
