Okay all you speed knitters

To celebrate Knit In Public Day, we’re knitting preemie caps for The Preemie Project over the weekend! The knitter who completes the most preemie caps by 9am PDT on Monday morning wins! To participate, go here.
The Preemie Project, Booties, Bonnets and Blankies for Premature Babies
The Preemie Project is most in need of caps for 3-8 lb. infants, so that’s what we’re knitting. Your finished hats must have a circumference of 11-12.5 inches and a length/height of 4-6 inches. You can get more sizing details in The Preemie Projects measurement guide.
We are not requiring you to use a specific pattern for this speed knitting contest, but here’s a suggested pattern that’s quick and easy. It’s the Basic Newborn Baby Hat by Jennifer L. Jackson.

When you are done, take a photo of your finished caps (they have to be ready to wear, no unwoven ends!) and post the photo along with a message telling us the total number of caps you finished before 9am PDT Monday, June 15 in this thread in the KIP Speed Knitting contest KAL. Remember, if you post your photo too early, someone might squeak out one more cap and beat you, but if you post it after 9am, you’re not entered to win!

A winner will be officially announced on Tuesday, June 16th. The winner will get a copy of Knitting in the Sun by Kristi Porter, your choice of a nickel plated or Harmony needle set , and enough cotton yarn to knit the 36” Cinnamon Bay beach blanket pattern from the book (that’s about 11 balls, you get to pick the yarn and the color).

Please don’t mail your completed caps to us. Send them to the Preemie Project at:

If you’re not using Comfy, Simply Cotton, or Shine, also be sure to check their crafting guidelines before you mail in your finished hats to make sure your yarn meets their requirements.

I’ll be knitting a couple of caps out of Comfy and Simply Cotton along with you this weekend, but don’t worry, I’m not fast and staff members can’t win anyway. I won’t be in the office over the weekend (I’ll be out knitting in public too), so if you post a question for me or any Knit Picks staff member, it might not get answered until Monday. Happy Knit In Public Day! <
