Knitting circa 1880

Even when I’m on vacation, I can’t escape knitting!
While enjoying the Sawtooth Mountains of central Idaho this last week, I camped near the abandoned gold mining town of Custer – which was relatively prosperous from 1880 til the turn of the century. The town has been converted into a sort of outdoor museum courtesy of the Forest Service and they’ve preserved some of the lifestyle and artifacts that those gold miners experienced.
In one of the miner’s homes, they talked about the knitting and crocheting that the miner’s wives made. Sadly, they weren’t using Knit Picks Options needles. 🙂

Wearing Lace Shawls

I’ve heard a lot of people say they don’t know how they would wear lace shawls, and that keeps them from knitting them. We think lace shawls are infinitely wearable (you don’t even have to look like an old lady when you do wear them!), and here is Nina to demonstrate:
The shawls shown, in order, are:
Chinook Shawl – from the Lace Yarn Sampler Kits, shown in the Deep Sea colorway.
Lady’s Circular Cape – from Victorian Lace Today, knit in Spring Green Heather Shadow lace yarn
Rona Shawl – from the Rona Shawl pattern knit in Stream Heather Alpaca Cloud lace yarn
Thistle Design Balmoral Shawl – from the Second Book of Modern Lace Knitting, knit in Cypress Gloss Lace yarn
Curved Shawl – from Victorian Lace Today, knit in Autumn Heather Alpaca Cloud lace yarn
Miralda’s Triangle Shawl – from Knitted Lace of Estonia, knit in Iris Heather Palette yarn
Myrtle Leaf Shawl – from …

Okay all you speed knitters

To celebrate Knit In Public Day, we’re knitting preemie caps for The Preemie Project over the weekend! The knitter who completes the most preemie caps by 9am PDT on Monday morning wins! To participate, go here.
The Preemie Project, Booties, Bonnets and Blankies for Premature Babies
The Preemie Project is most in need of caps for 3-8 lb. infants, so that’s what we’re knitting. Your finished hats must have a circumference of 11-12.5 inches and a length/height of 4-6 inches. You can get more sizing details in The Preemie Projects measurement guide.
We are not requiring you to use a specific pattern for this speed knitting contest, but here’s a suggested pattern that’s quick and easy. It’s the Basic Newborn Baby Hat by Jennifer L. Jackson.
When you are done, take a photo of your finished caps (they have to be ready to wear, no unwoven ends!) …

Are you Essentially Strolling?

You might remember a while ago when we ran a contest to rename our Essential sock yarn – well the winner was “Stroll”! Not too long ago, we got our first shipment of some colors with the new name on the label, so depending on what color you order, you might get to see the new labels. I just wanted to remind everyone that Stroll is exactly the same fiber content (75% superwash Merino, 25% nylon) and gauge (7 – 8 sts = 1″ on US 1 – 3 needles) and is 4-ply just like Essential – same colors, too.
Over the next couple months, more and more colors will come in with the Stroll name on the label. In August, we will switch the name in our catalog and here on our web site. You’ll still be able to find projects on Ravelry for Essential, but you’ll also start to …

Amigurumi Mayhem!

The folks at the office have been having a ball with our Gurumi Family:

May was outrageously cute knits month here at KP HQ, in keeping with the Knits for Kids theme of our last catalog. I have a hunch that a few folks in the KAL for Kids aren’t going to be able to resist these, either. These toys are cute to both kids and adults alike! Knit out of soft, washable Shine Sport, they are fast, portable, and offer infinite possibilities for personalized embellishment. I’m brainstorming kids I know that I could knit these for, and since each kit makes all 4 family members, I could give away three and very sneakily keep my favorite for myself! <

Baby socks for Alice

When I was home on maternity leave I got the idea for some socks for Alice that she could wear with her Easter dress. I had some delicate cotton lace in my sewing notions box, and I decided to make up a sock pattern to use it. When I was done, I wrote up the very simple pattern to be able to offer it for free on the Knit Picks site and the “Fancy Baby Sock” pattern was born!
Alice’s socks use Shine Sport in Blush and White. Comfy Sport would also work well. Here she is wearing them at Easter being held by her great-granny and surrounded by two of her second cousins:

Dyed and Dried!

Well, my acid-dyed experiments are dry and vinegar-smell-free (much
to the relief of my hubby)! I wanted to wait till they were good and dry
before sharing the results, because after the steam bath, some of them
looked a little questionable! But, I am pleased to say that they’re
lookin’ pretty good now!

The first one I tried to dye to match my favorite mug.

Interview with Toni Carr

In my previous job life as a bookstore girl (where I lovingly took care of the knitting section), I remember when Toni Carr‘s book Knockdown Knits was released. I immediately snapped it up – it was so much fun to read & such great projects, even for those who aren’t roller girls like Toni. (With my incredible clumsiness, I would be a danger to myself & to others!)
Imagine my delight when I started working on IDP and discovered that Toni was already a part of it! Of course I had to do an interview!
How long have you been knitting? I started seriously knitting about 9 years ago.
What motivated you to learn to knit?
In all honesty, my Grandmother lived all by herself, way out in the country. I knew she was lonely and could use some company, but the fact that she is deaf caused a communication …

Love Stroll Tonals, but not so into socks?

While I can’t say that I’m in the camp of non-obsessive sock
knitting, I know it’s not for everybody! But, with such wonderful
colors, Stroll Tonal
is pretty universally appealing whether you like socks or not. So, if
not socks, what do you do with it? Well, I’ve got a few ideas!

First,
I have to say that our IDP
designers have done a bang-up job of showcasing our yarns to their best
advantage. And there are a lot of patterns that would look awesome in Stroll Tonals!
Here are a few:

Beverly
Cardigan
by Snowden Becker

I can imagine
this in the “Gypsy” colorway of Stroll Tonal
with Black Stroll as the
accent. Very elegant!
