A sequel to our 2015 Fair Isle collection, Creative Color is packed with 15 brand new patterns for colorwork knitting from our favorite independent designers! The projects range from accessories to complex fair isle sweaters, but all are equally stunning! But what happens if you love the pattern, but the color palette just isn't your style? It's a bit more complicated to substitute colors for a pattern that calls for many different shades - but it's definitely not impossible! Spring is almost over - can you believe it? Only about a month to go until summer, and I don't know if I'm ready quite yet. The weather in the Northwest has been everything from 50 to 90 degrees already, giving us a sample of what looks to be the hot summer ahead. So to keep spring around for just a bit longer (at least in my mind, and on my needles) I made some sweater for my daughters. Want to see? |

I feel like we don't see enough coin purses out there - they're so handy, not just for coins but for other small little items you don't want to have to keep digging though a big purse to find (I keep lip balm & gloss in mine!). Plus they're handy if you just want to carry around a few items and not worry about a large purse on a night out. Do you like knitting and crocheting with alpaca yarn? I love it. Everything I make is so soft and light. I'm not a lace knitter, so when Alpaca Cloud Lace Yarn came out in such a stunning array of colors, I lamented that it was a bit too thin for anything I've got in my queue. Enter Alpaca Cloud Fingering Yarn, in such an amazing palette and fingering weight for lightweight (but so warm!) sweaters, shawls, and amazing colorwork. |

Picking color palettes has never been easier with the widespread use of smart phones and tablets. I'm going to feature four free applications that I use on my iphone to either pick from a photograph found online or a picture I snap as I walk around my neighborhood! When you first start to explore color theory, chances are that you'll run across a lot of new terms (and they might seem at first to all refer to the same thing - color)! However, once you dive into this fascinating topic - you'll learn the subtle differences between things like hue, value, tint, shade and tone. To start, let's go over the broadest term in this group of color theory words: hue. In painting, hue actually refers to a pure color - red, yellow, blue - without any white or black added to it. But in a broader sense, hue is just a fancy word for color! Another term you'll come across is value - this word is synonymous to what we describe a color as light or dark. You can also think about value in terms of how bright a color is. Tint, shade and tone are three other terms you might see when reading through color theory. Let's explore these qualities a bit more in depth. |

Which is why this week we'll be exploring more about color theory! Color is all around us - it has the ability to affect our mood, it can make us feel energized, it can make us sleepy, it can make us hungry. And yes, it can even affect our knitting and crocheting! Although the study of color is quite complex, getting a good foundation of the basics is all you need to expand the possibilities of your craft. |
