Baseball and Knitting!

I make no secret of my love of baseball and it comes out full force this time of year – it’s the start of the baseball season!  Well, okay, it’s still only spring training, but at least I can watch baseball on TV again.  And even though the three teams we root for in my household ended up on the bottom of their divisions at the end of last year (that would be the Boston Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners, and the Minnesota Twins), springtime brings a new start and a new hope for the baseball season.

So you can imagine how much I was looking forward to Allyson Dykhuizen‘s brand new collection – Vintage-Inspired Baseball Knits!

Allyson and I chat quite a bit about baseball and last summer, we started talking about classic baseball as well as the difficulty of finding knitting patterns for baseball nuts like us.  So she came up with 6 new patterns inspired by those wonderful styles – perfect for modern baseball fans to wear to games!

I really love the Knickerbocker Tee – it’s knit in Comfy Sport, which is great since at this time of year, I really want to get started on lighter weight cotton projects! And it has such a great classic look of a baseball t-shirt that’s perfect in your team’s colors.

The cover sweater, the Trolly Dodger, is another favorite.  I love the style (cardigan! pockets! stripes!) but what makes it even better at how customizable it is.  Allyson has included on her website free charts for all of the 16 original baseball teams (which includes my beloved Red Sox) that you can add to any of her patterns.

Vintage Inspired Baseball Knits: 16 Original Baseball Team Logos

While I want to make all the patterns in Vintage-Inspired Baseball Knits, my first one will be the one I will likely get the most use out of.

That will be the Stadium Blanket!  It gets quite chilly once the sun goes down in the Pacific Northwest, even in the height of the summer.  Since 90% of the baseball games I attend are in Seattle, I must make myself a nice Mariners blanket to keep me warm during extra innings.  I’m trying to decide between two different yarns:

Wool of the Andes in Winter Night, Spruce, and Silver – though now I’m tempted to change Silver to White.

Brava in Solstice Heather, Tranquil and Dove Heather, thought I think Solstice might be a bit too dark. The original is in also in Brava – and has the added benefit of machine washablitily in case I get a little too excited about a home run and spill my drink!

Once I decide, I’m hoping to have it done by my first game (which may be the Home Opener!) but we’ll see how quickly I can knit it up.  I should at least have it at least in time for the Seattle Stitch N’ Pitch!

If you love baseball too, be sure to also check out the adorable video we made with Allyson on the making of Vintage-Inspired Baseball Knits too!
