Have you seen our new (utterly adorable!) Sheep Greeting Cards yet? They’re here just in time for sending thoughtful “thank you’s” or seasons greetings to everyone on your list! This was by far my most favorite photo shoot research and go on and I thought I’d take a moment to show you a few of the cute photos that we didn’t use for the cards and tell you a little bit about the Cedar Haven Farm.
I spent some time researching various fiber farms around Oregon last June and settled on Cedar Haven Farm in picturesque Estacada, Oregon.
I LOVE Shetland sheep. Shetlands have nimble little spindle legs and sturdy bodies perfectly sized for smaller farms. I’ve spent a few months wrangling much larger sheep on a dairy in Vermont and I very much appreciate the more compact stature.
Lynne Deschler has spent quite a bit of time socializing all of her sheep and new lambs so that they’ll make wonderful pets and sweet tempered additions to other fiber flocks. I can’t begin to tell you how much of a difference her attention to detail makes, especially when you’re climbing around a paddock full of sheep with a very large camera!
The sheep were so expressive and patient with us, even though we were interrupting their dinner time.
Lynne was able to name each sheep for us and give us a little back story, how each was related and how old they were. The newest batch of lambs had spice themed names like Chipotle, the friendliest of the bunch (he’s towards the top of the post with his head in my hand).
These outtakes were some of my favorite photos and I’m glad I get a chance to share them in a blog post! Amy and I spent a few hours with this little flock and we were able to see glimmers of their different personalities over the course of the evening. This black ewe was a touch skittish but she had the best face and lip curls.
Stoic and shy, this one kept an eye on the proceedings from across the field. I think she was one of the oldest at 11 or 12 years.
The older ewes were in with Cedar Haven’s guard llama who, while not friendly, was lovely to watch as he kept an eye on his flock.
The trip and sheep were absolutely charming and the perfect summer project. We saw Lynne and some of her flock at the Black Sheep Gathering fiber festival a few weeks later and made sure to stop by and give out a few head scratches and pets.
