One of the many joys of my Knit Picks life is making treasured friends through our mutual love of fiber art. A couple of years ago, I received a package containing a delightfully colorful pair of socks. They were accompanied by a note from Frances Fisher explaining that she is a fan of Knit Picks and these socks were a gift of what she calls her Hodgepodge socks.
Of course, I sent back a Thank You note and before I knew it, Frances and I had become e-mail pals. This fall, she sent me another pair of socks and I have to admit to becoming completely intrigued by her sock knitting obsession. She has knit over 200 pairs of socks and she likes to use them to reach out to new friends and to stay connected with people. She submitted a pair into an art show. The bits of yarns were from yarns from around the world. The curator of the show titled them Global Laundry.
I realized that if I enjoyed Frances’ friendship, it was likely that you might enjoy “meeting” her. She graciously agreed to letting me chat with her for Podcast #206. We had so much fun! And, as soon as I hung up Skype, I dug around in my sock yarns and set up to knit my own Hodgepodge socks. I don’t have a stash of sock yarn leftovers here in Mexico so I cheated a little bit. I picked three Gloss fingering colors and cast-on. Using Frances’ tips, I whipped out the socks in about ten days! I can completely understand how she can knit and knit and knit.
Take a listen to the podcast to hear more about this remarkable woman. You will be just as charmed as me and may need to start your own pair of Hodgepodge socks!
