Knitting on the go again

Last weekend I went on a 40 mile lodge to lodge hike with my parents along the Rogue River in Oregon. I was carrying everything I needed for the hike on my back, so I was very conscience of weight and bulk. Of course though, I had to bring knitting.
The picture is of me and my dad.
So I brought 3 balls of comfy from my stash and tested some hand towel/kitchen towel designs I am considering.
I had the three balls, one fixed circular needle and a xerox copy of a feather and fan pattern all in a zip loc bag and it all weighed less than my zip loc bag that contained my toothbrush and mini deodorant.
The hike was great, a truly perfect weekend, and in the evenings after dinner I got quite a bit of knitting done. …

Quick Knit

Wow, the Fetching Mitts were super fast to knit, and the City Tweed HW makes them so warm! I made the cabled sections on these a little longer than the pattern calls for because I like mitts that cover more of my arm and fingers. Even so, these only used 85 grams of yarn out of the 100 gram ball, so they’re a one-skein project! They’d make a great Christmas gift (but I’m going to keep these for myself). <

Hello, Little Bubbles, and the Comfy KAL!

We’re all excited about the release of our Little Bubbles Baby Set , but I think I’m a little bit extra excited, because this was my first big design project here at Knit Picks, and I’ve been holding my tongue about it until now! But I finally can talk about it, and as this little movie will show, once given the opportunity, I talked, and talked and talked.

And the amazing thing is; I have even more, that I forgot to say! Like, that the sweater patterns come with two sleeve options! And, how cool would it be to knit the pattern for an older child (or an adult!) in Comfy worsted? I can’t believe I forgot to say all this stuff!? But, that’s what the knitalongs are for, right? For more Little Bubbles and Comfy chatter, check out the Comfy KAL, just started …

Baby socks for Alice

When I was home on maternity leave I got the idea for some socks for Alice that she could wear with her Easter dress. I had some delicate cotton lace in my sewing notions box, and I decided to make up a sock pattern to use it. When I was done, I wrote up the very simple pattern to be able to offer it for free on the Knit Picks site and the “Fancy Baby Sock” pattern was born!
Alice’s socks use Shine Sport in Blush and White. Comfy Sport would also work well. Here she is wearing them at Easter being held by her great-granny and surrounded by two of her second cousins:

Mr. Foster goes to work!

As many of you have likely noticed, the newest Mr. Foster kits are up. (They won’t last long, though, so if you’re interested you might want to get him now!)
Though the life of lounging around in his pajamas was great, Mr. Foster felt he had a greater purpose in life. So, he got a job as a security guard to save up some money, joined the Navy to get some on-the-job training, and then put himself through medical school! He’s quite proud of himself, and is really eager to get his residency going.

But before he does, he’s on a little vacation. Last I heard it was nice and warm where he is – and there are apparently lots of nice looking ladies there. I wonder if he’s actually thinking about settling down? …

Amigurumi Mayhem!

The folks at the office have been having a ball with our Gurumi Family:

May was outrageously cute knits month here at KP HQ, in keeping with the Knits for Kids theme of our last catalog. I have a hunch that a few folks in the KAL for Kids aren’t going to be able to resist these, either. These toys are cute to both kids and adults alike! Knit out of soft, washable Shine Sport, they are fast, portable, and offer infinite possibilities for personalized embellishment. I’m brainstorming kids I know that I could knit these for, and since each kit makes all 4 family members, I could give away three and very sneakily keep my favorite for myself! <

A drool-worthy baby kit

Nina already blogged about our Little Bubbles Baby Set, but I thought I would share my experience photographing it on my 3 month old yesterday because it is so entertaining. We needed a modeled picture of the pinks set for banner ads, and the sample was knit in the 0-6 month size, so it was Alice’s big break into modeling. The sweater and hat fit her perfectly (the booties were a tad too small for her long feet), so I figured that the photos would be a piece of cake, assuming she didn’t spit up on the sweater. Wrong!
For every photo I took like this…

…I took nine like this…

…or this…

…or this:

Of course, from a parental perspective all of these are adorable, but the majority of them …

The winner of our “Give One Away” Contest

Holly Lorenz! Congratulations Holly.
Holly is the winner of our “Give One Away” contest, where we asked people to tell their best story of giving away their finished knitted projects. All of the stories were posted in the “Give One Away” Knit along. We’ll contact Holly directly, get her mailing address, and send her a great gift basket filled with organic goodies, plus needles and yarn from Knit Picks.
Over 100 people voted, and Holly was the clear winner. There were six choices and Holly received over 50% of the votes.
Here is Holly’s story
6. Forty years ago I started an intricate aran pullover for my boyfriend. Relationship ended and when I finished the sweater I gave it to my father (despite the fact that the boyfriend was over 6 ft and my dad is barely 5 ‘7″.) This year he turned 90, and he has faithfully worn that same sweater to every …
