As some of you may have seen by now, the latest cover of the Knit Picks catalog has some really adorable sheep standing in front of the Heartlands Road Trip Tote. We all thought these little needle felted sheep were simply too cute not to share, so we went right to work on a tutorial. And do you want to know the best part? They are oh so easy to make! With the right tools and some roving, you will be on your way to making your very own sheep.
For the sheep pictured on the catalog cover, we simply used some Bare Roving along with the darker brown roving in the Furry Friends Wool Roving Pack. Next, you will also need a Needle Felting Mat and a Needle Felting Tool. As for the little legs that the sheep got, we simply used black paper clips. That’s it! Once you have these items in place, you are ready to go.
It takes a bit of practice at first, but the thing I really loved about making these sheep was the element of surprise – each sheep had its own distinct shape, size and personality! You can make these as simple or as detailed as you want. Try making bigger ones along with smaller sheep to complete your flock. It is really addictive and fun to see these sheep take form. One thing to keep in mind is that the needles on the felting tool are sharp, so it is important to be
careful! The particular style of needle felting tool we used does have a plastic guard around the needles to help avoid poking yourself, just make sure to go slowly at first.
