Christmas Scarf Fiesta!

Christmas is almost here. Well, if you crochet and knit, that is. This is my first holiday season as a crocheter, and I hope my family and friends are prepared for the sudden shift in the types of gifts I bestow. Goodbye gift cards, hellllooo scarves. Not only will they appreciate the time and effort that is invested in handmade gifts, but I hope to also bedazzle them (all non-crocheters) and receive showers of compliments on my yarny skills. It’s like a gift for myself, too. Win win.

My obsessive nature allows me to fixate exclusively on one pattern at a time, so this season my beloveds will be receiving scarves, all half double crochet through the back loop. This nifty stitch creates a more ‘knit’-like effect, and lends a modern, chic look to the project. I’m quite enraptured with it!

My first scarf that’s actually presentable for public presentation, worked in the lovely and scrumptious Shine cotton yarn:

I just love that City Tweed one. I can’t wait to see it finished! 🙂

BTW, you are teasing us about the soon-to-be-released yarn! I’m on pins and (knitting) needles!

I’ve started a winter-themed Organic Seasons sweater for my little niece using Swish, and next will be a hat and mittens (and hopefully a scarf) for my nephew who loves Minecraft. They will have “creepers” on them, made in Brava. I also hope to finish my portable project (Noro striped scarf) for my husband, in Chroma fingering Theatre and Fossil. I wish I had more knitting time to make more gifts! I like the idea of washcloths/face cloths for quick gifts, perhaps for the teachers? If I make at least 1 per, that won’t be too overwhelming, just flush out the gift with a nice soap. Must stalk the Cyber Monday sale for cotton yarns!

We are empty nesters and usually I buy something small for all the girls and something else for all the boys. This year for the girls, I am making face cloths. I hope to have three each (doable since there are only 4 girls) and will include a nice, homemade (not by me!) bar of soap and a gift certificate to Bath and Body Works. Even if they don’t use them as face cloths, they can use them as dish cloths!

What color is the City Tweed?

    • Heidi W / October 9, 2013

      Brocade 🙂

Your scarves are so pretty! How much yarn is needed and what size hook do you use?

    • Heidi W / October 8, 2013

Thank you! 🙂 I used two balls of Shine Worsted with 5.5m hook for each of the cottons scarves, and one ball of City Tweed with 6m hook for the wool one.

I make things for folks all year long. I see a yarn that just looks like someone would like it, and I purchase/make something for them. I put my finished items in a cedar chest, then get them out in time for birthdays and holidays.

I have found that Christmas has become so much easier now that I have learned to knit and crochet. This year I have completed: a pair of knit fingerless hand warmers, three knit hats, a knit scarf, and a crocheted granny stripe throw/lap blanket type thing. I still have one more knit hat to complete (maybe two), a fancy lace knit scarf, a really cute pair of felted knit slippers, and a cute tank top for my 7 year old niece.

Wow, you’re on a roll! And I though I was ahead of the game! 🙂

I haven’t even started yet. I like to give crocheted blankets as gifts, since for me crochet is so much faster than knitting. But I haven’t even bought the yarn yet. Yikes! Must. Order. Tonight.
