Sweater Weather is finally here, and we’re excited to announce that our next knit-along will be the Axiom Sweater by Claire Slade!

What: Knit the Axiom Sweater along with us
When: October 1st – December 15th 2023
Skills to Know: CO, BO, knit, purl, increases, 2×2 cables, getting gauge, seaming, picking up and knitting
Why: To make a beautiful cabled sweater with others
We chose the Axiom Sweater because it’s a great choice for a first cabled sweater, as well as being gender-neutral and size inclusive. It’s a simple, seamed, drop-shoulder pullover knit in worsted weight with a loose fit, and the majority of the knitting is relaxing, plain stockinette. The cables are exclusively on the front, which is what makes this project so approachable for folks who haven’t knit a cabled sweater before—it’s not a huge commitment to cabling like an allover cabled sweater, allowing you to get just a taste of what a big cabled project might be like. Instructions for the cables are given in both written and charted format, too!
If you’re not new to knitting cabled sweaters, Axiom is an amazing canvas for playing with pattern modifications. It can easily be converted to a seamless sweater (which we’ll be explaining how to do in a future blog post), shaping can be added, and so much more. Several Knit Picks staff members are planning creative modifications, such as adding a second color, changing the pullover into a cardigan, and making a cropped, fitted version.
The knit-along runs from October 1st through December 15th, giving half a month for each of the four pieces of the sweater and another half of a month for seaming, the neckline, other finishing work, or just catching up if you fall behind! If you stay on track, your sweater will be done in time for holiday parties, the official start of winter, or to be an extra special holiday gift for someone you love. Throughout the KAL, we’ll have blog posts with extra tips to help your project, including advice on choosing the yarn, how to convert the pattern to be seamless, and tips for cabling without a cable needle. Plus, we’ll be sharing our own progress both here under the Axiom KAL tag and on social media under #AxiomKAL. Share your own work under the hashtag, too!
