It’s National Craft Month! Crafting should be celebrated every day of the year, but March is a great time to show extra love to crafts. We’re all knitters and crocheters here at Knit Picks, so we thought the beginning of National Craft Month would be the perfect chance to share just some of the other crafts we do. Get to know our team, and check out the diverse set of skills they have!

I’ve sewed a little all my life, but I started sewing from patterns in 2018, completely fell in love with creating my own clothes from scratch, and I pretty much stopped buying clothes in 2019, with all new wardrobe additions being handmade now (with the exception of the occasional t-shirt which I buy to support artists or fundraisers, etc). I love pairing handsewn items with handknit items for multi-textured me-made outfits!

Being stuck at home in the pandemic, I was feeling creatively drained. I was given a small kiln and decided to teach myself how to throw pottery. I love that I have a creative outlet that I can explore without having a finished product in mind!

I’ve been cross stitching since I was a young child–it was something my entire family did during the long winters stuck in the middle of nowhere. As an adult, I pick it up every few years, enjoy it, and then put it down again. This year is an “on” year, and I’ve been making some fun designs to hang up in my kitchen. I’m loving it all over again.
I have fond memories of watching my mom doing macramé in its heyday of the 70s/80s and when I recently spotted an ad for a local class, I decided it was time to try it out. I had so much fun, and I immediately bought some supplies to continue (along with some new plants to go with it).

I started weaving about 6 years ago. I like to do it as a break from knitting or crocheting, because it uses a completely different part of my brain. I have a small collection of old table looms, one of which is nearly 100 years old. I mostly make scarves, but sometimes I also make little wool stuffed animals. To make the stuffed animals, I wash the woven wool fabric to felt it, so when I cut out the pieces it doesn’t unravel.
Making latch hook rugs is definitely a sometimes craft for me. The first time I tried a to make a latch hook kit, I was about 12 years old, and I never finished it. But when I found an unopened kit at a thrift store about a year ago, I thought I’d give it another try. And yes, it took me the full year to finish it, but I did finish it!

My Mom taught me how to knit and needlepoint when I was very young. I feel blessed to have hobbies I share with my Mom. I also appreciate having crafts that bring me balance and calm.
My mother-in-law taught me how to quilt. It’s been fun having a new craft to learn.
Around the time of the pandemic, a dear friend of mine started doing embroidery. We started getting together a couple times a month to do embroidery–it’s so wonderful to have friends and family to share crafts with.

I like to dabble in making earrings and necklaces. I tend to find inspiration while scrolling and then dive into my boxes of beads and wires and whatnots to see if I can create something pretty.
Since adopting my older dog, Calamity Jane, in 2013, I make no-sew dog and cat toys out of fleece to donate to area shelters and rescues each Valentine’s Day (the anniversary of Calamity’s adoption).

Knitting consumes most of my craft time, but one of my other favorite crafts is playing with dye with my best friend. We started off tie-dyeing matching sweatsuits a few years ago, but last summer we discovered our new passion: ice dyeing old clothes we already own. We overdyed lighter pieces as well as transformed white screen-printed t-shirts, and it’s so much fun to be able to refresh old clothing in an afternoon. We’re impatiently waiting for the weather to warm up to ice dye some more. Maybe I’ll even dye some cotton yarn!

I like doing a whole bunch of stuff!! I make a lot of punch needle things like wall hangings, pillows, and rugs! Punch needling is a great way to use up a whole bunch of yarn, and you get something cute and cozy.
I also really like making things with air dry clay, embroidery or sewing little guys! crafting is so fun and I love just having creative outlets where I’m not looking at a screen!
