To celebrate the release of our 2014 dishcloth collection 52 Weeks of Dishcloths: A Knit Picks Kitchen Spectacular, we’re taking some favorite dishcloth patterns of 2014 and re-purposing them into objects you’ll love to own. Our Dishcloth Remix blog series offers you “pithy directions” (as Elizabeth Zimmerman would say) to help you make fun and whimsical objects out of the stitch patterns in this amazing book. Last week, we featured Stacey’s Orbital Dishcloth, which became a trivet and coaster set. This week, my very own Emerald City Dishcloth was up-sized to make a Yellow Brick Road Rug, an adorable accent to any room in your home.
To make the Yellow Brick Road Rug, we used Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky Yarn in colors Semolina (3 skeins) and Marble Heather (2 skeins). This yarn is great for a rug because it’s bulky, so the knitting is quick, it’s washable, as all rugs should be, and it’s squishy, so your feet have a soft, bouncy place to land.
We cast on 91 stitches on size 10 needles and followed the dishcloth’s stitch pattern until the yarn almost ran out (that’s about 23.5 repeats, if you’re counting).
The resulting rug is 22 inches wide and 36 inches long, but you can make it any dimensions you’d like by adding more stitches across, or continuing on with another skein, if desired.
Now fans of the Wizard of Oz can act out Dorothy’s journey on a full scale “road”. Wouldn’t a red brick rug in colorways Hollyberry and Coal be cute, too?
