Sweet Spring Projects by Independent Designers

Spring is most definitely in the air! It’s time to put away our sweaters and chunky scarves and bring out our lighter wardrobes. For all of us fiber lovers, that means it’s time for a fun new spring yarn project! Or two… or three…

Let’s start with this fabulous Mesa Wrap, designed by Chelsea Berkompas. It’s a light and airy summer wrap with sections of mesh lace and a distinct striping pattern shaped by simple short rows. Knit in Lindy Chain, this wrap has a wonderful drape and sheen.

My Favorite Independent Designer Photos

Some of my favorite days at work are photo shoot days. Every catalog cycle we log anywhere between 1-4 location shoots and 2-5 in-house studio days where we shoot tools, garments, yarn, books and all sorts of other things that crop up along the way. Each kind of shoot has this moment when everything just clicks and Amy and I can get that “perfect shot” that was exactly what we had in mind. Every once in a while we have a shot that totally exceeds our expectations and makes me actually clap my hands and gasp when I see the image on the screen.

I wanted to take a minute and shine the spotlight on some of my favorite photos that we’ve taken recently that maybe didn’t make it into the catalog or are Independent Designer’s patterns that I’m especially proud of. Enjoy!

Designer Interviews for October Kits!

With cooler weather fast approaching, it only seems appropriate that the new catalog is jam packed with all kinds of knitting goodness! And with so many kits to choose from, there is really something for everyone. You will find everything from blankets and throws to hats, bags, mittens, toys and holiday decorations.

One of my favorites is the Winter Wonderful Kit, I just love the idea of getting a kit of yarn to make my very own set of holiday decorations! I am a total sucker for the holidays and always get excited when I can fill my house with cozy and festive home decor. There are so many options for knitted toys, little gifts, and decorations – and even though it would be time consuming, the knitted string of lights would be completely worth it. Watch Kerin’s designer interview for the Winter Wonderful Kit to see all of the adorable things you could make!

TNNA – the designers!

One of the best things about TNNA for me was meeting all the wonderful designers I work with all the time – both in the IDP program as well as on other projects.  I tried not to be all fangirly with designers I’ve loved even before I started working here but it was hard not to be starstruck.

First up (once I remembered to start taking pictures) was one of the original IDP designers – David Castillo.

Designer Interviews for New Summer Shawl Kits

Summer seems to have gotten a late start this year, but it looks like the sunshine has come just in time for all of the wonderful new shawl kits! And of course, Kerin kindly shared her inspiration for the colors and designs behind these shawls – some of which come from the most unlikely of places! But it just goes to show that inspiration is around us everywhere.

New Designer Interviews!

As you may have noticed already, it has been a busy week here at Knit
Picks! Not only have we added lots of new yarny goodness, but there are
also many new kits as well! And if you are like me and love to hear
about the inspriation behind a design or simply how an idea transformed
into a finished project, these designer interview with Kerin are a real
treat!

And to pass along the inside scoop on these amazing new
kits, Kerin and I worked together to bring you another round of designer
interviews! You can now see videos for the Shift Totes, the Dimensions
Wrap, the Tiddlywinks Baby Set and the Fancy Feet kit simply by clicking
on the “video” tab when viewing the kit. Besides finding out the spark
of creativity for these patterns, Kerin also mentions specific
construction design and techniques as well as tips and tricks. Another
thing that I really like about these videos is how it adds another way
to see the actual designs knit up, how large they are as well as how
they move and drape.

Designer Interview Videos

In addition to the great tutorials and videos
we have available at Knit Picks, we have also been working hard on
expanding our videos to include a behind the scenes look at new kits! If
you have ever wondered about the inspiration behind the projects or
simply want to hear more about the design process that goes into the
kits, you really have to check out the Designer Interview videos!

After all of the designing, editing, sample knitting and re-editing
is done and the kits are ready to make their debut, I ask our talented
designer Kerin
to give everyone an inside look into each kit. These designer videos
are really great for finding out which specific techniques, construction
and design elements are used as well as learning about any tips or
tricks Kerin
might have to make your project a success. I find it endlessly
fascinating to hear about the point of inspiration that started each
project alongside the final piece.
