This simple hat features garter stitch in the round, which creates a stretchy fabric that fit a wide range of head sizes. It can be made in a short beanie style or with a longer body for a super slouch – great for last minute gifts. Everyone could use a hat to wear in chilly weather!

I have made several of these hats over the years – in fact I made the sample in the images above in my favorite yarn Hawthorne Kettle! They knit up super quick and are a great project for a weekend of marathoning your favorite TV show. I wear mine all the time- it keeps my head warm but it’s light enough to wear all the time (like when I have bad hair day!).  It also squishes down where I can just throw it my coat pocket when I’m on the go.

This pattern really looks great in any fingering weight yarn – from solid to tonal to handpaints!  I’ve personally made versions in Stroll Handpainted (those stockinette lines break up any color pooling), Hawthorne (Multi, Speckle and Kettle), Preciosa Fingering and even a very special version in Capretta! It’s a great way to play with a new yarn – I’m already planning a version in our newest yarn, Chroma Twist. I can’t wait to knit up a colorful and unique version in a crazy colorway like Ferris Wheel!

Accessory Weather

Those frosted windshields and travel mugs full of hot tea mean that it’s accessory weather! Fingerless mittens have come out of storage weeks ago, I’ve started carrying around a slouchy hat in my purse for windy emergencies this week and I just sorted through my chest of knit sweaters. I’ve been pretty steadily increasing the winter wardrobes of my extended family and friends every Christmas and this year is certainly no different. I wanted to share a few of my recent favorites to add to your own gift list!

I heard that Tincanknits would be coming to my local yarn shop in a few months ago so I popped over to look at their patterns on Ravelry as a little refresher before I made a trip to see the projects in person. I fell in love with their Antler Hat pattern for a second time and decided to make one for my mother in Full Circle Worsted Ponderosa. I love the combination of simple repeats in this cable pattern and the lovely stitch definition of Full Circle. The single ply yarn makes such a bouncy, cozy fabric!

More recently, I whipped up a pair of Stacey’s Semplice Fingerless Mitts (free pattern!) in my favorite yellow: Turmeric in Swish DK. It doesn’t get more autumnal than that. I was able to do them two-at-a-time which means that both thumbs actually ARE the same length (I problem of mine when it comes to mittens). Unisex and super versatile – this pattern has been in heavy rotation lately as I try to whittle down my Christmas gift list!

Lastly, I wanted to try my hand a crochet beanie. I still have some Chroma Worsted samples kicking around in my stash and I just love how it crochets up. I discovered Rohn Strong‘s great patterns on Ravelry and tried my hand at his Grizzly hat pattern. It’s got just the right amount of slouch and fits perfectly, this pattern is definitely added to my “second time around” list for last minute gifts. I’ve got my eye on a ball of Chroma Worsted Soft Rock for one and Midwinter for another.

Are you still working on big gift projects for Christmas or are you trying to fill in some gaps with smaller accessories too? I still have one more sweater to get crackin’ on but then it’ll be smooth sailing for the rest of the month!

Garter Ridge Hat in Stroll Tweed

About once a catalog cycle I hear myself saying “Oh… I should really make this one” as I hold up one garment or another from a pattern collection during a photo shoot. That list keeps getting longer and I find myself forgetting about them once the catalog mails and some gorgeous project photo catches my eye on Pinterest or Ravelry. This time however, I managed to mentally “earmark” the Garter Ridge Hat from the Light Basics pattern collection as a project that would make a a lovely hat for my dad.

The perfect opportunity to actually cast on came when his birthday rolled around like it does every year, and once again I was surprised as I am every year and have to scramble for presents like I do every year. I’m actually getting to be quite good at whipping things up with these sorts of tight deadlines and this year was no different. I cast on and managed to finish it with about a day to spare for blocking and a quick photo before I wrapped it up and gifted it with a few other goodies.

My parents have taken up hiking in the past year and I thought that the Garter Ridge Hat would be the perfect accessory for their adventures around Oregon. The combination of springy Stroll Tweed Marine yarn and garter stitch makes this hat super stretchy, perfect for a range of head sizes (my head is 20″ and my dad’s noggin is roughly 24″ and fits both of us really well). This hat has all the characteristics that come to mind when I think about hiking: breathability, lightweight fabric, adjustable, washable, soft and it doesn’t take up much room once it’s folded away.

This pattern is simple enough to be that “first hat” project for beginning knitters and a quick project for a more experienced one. Both my mother and father could wear this on the trail without thinking twice about size and the color choice was neutral enough that neither would hesitate to pop it on in. I think this pattern would look equally wonderful in a bright pink (Stroll Glimmer Runway, anyone?) for a more feminine hat. I’m already dreaming about the beanie version of this pattern in Capretta Platinum for myself and maybe another one in Capretta Admiral for a lucky fella this Christmas.

There have been so many lovely garments in the past few pattern collections, which ones have caught your eye? Or have you already cast on your favorite? I’d love any other yarn suggestions for this hat because I’m sure I’ll be making quite a few more in the months to come!
