For the Love of Toggles

I love toggle closures. Sure, they’re a bit heavier than buttons, but they’re such an easy, un-fussy, and secure closure for handmade items. Recently, I sewed my daughters some coats and used toggles from Knit Picks, and they get as many, if not more, compliments (and inquiries) than the coats themselves! For Lulu’s coat I used our Feather Toggle. Light and flat and really stylish, it’s added a little something special to the outside of her coat. Since the coat is lined with Liberty flowers, too, I like that the toggles reflect what’s going on in the interior of the coat.

For Penny’s coat, I used the Small Talon Toggle. It’s a straightforward 2″ toggle that is sturdy, without being heavy. Since the inside print of her coat was so busy and the exterior fabric was a pretty vibrant teal, I kept it simple with these black toggles on the outside.

So many of you downloaded our Sipalu Bag pattern when it was featured in our Twelve Weeks of Gifting. Any of our toggles would be a great closure for it. The Tree of Life Felted Bag is also a lovely accessory with a toggle closure.

I’m sure so many of our patterns, especially ones from Burnished (like The Roundstone Coat Pattern), would be great with toggle closures. Have you ever used them on any of your handknits? With all the stylish varieties we have on the site, I’ll definitely be stashing some for those cardigans I have in the queue for 2016.

What lucky kids to have a Mom who can sew up such adorable, custom made coats for them! The toggles are the perfect finishing touch. I never would have thought of that. I think they’d be much easier for little hands to manipulate than buttons as well. I wasn’t aware that KnitPicks carries toggles and buttons and things, but now that I look, I see there are tons of cute ones on the site!
