Kitties and Knitters (plus a giveaway!)

Giveaway is now closed – we’ll announce the winners soon!

We hang our heads in shame.

Yesterday (October 29th) was National Cat Day and we completely missed it. I would normally take any opportunity to yak about kitties – either about my own or the cats & kittens I hang out with when I volunteer at Pixie Project.

My kitty Rorschach, surrounded by yarn.

Well even if it is a few days late, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite kitty related crafty things anyway!

So it’s pretty obvious I was really excited about our new little design that Heidi created – the Yarn Kittens!

We have these little kitties on buttons, tote bags & project bags and they are just adorable.  I am currently wearing my kitty button at work today in fact!

Another kitty project I’ve probably mentioned before is Angela Modzelewski’s adorable Kitty Cat Hat & Mitts.  I just love it – I even made a set for my niece a year or so ago. It might be a little late for your Halloween costume but I think these are adorable for any time of year.

Finally, we have a couple of adorable books for serious cat lovers – Knitted Cats & Kittens by Sue Stratford and Knit Your Own Cat by Sally Muir & Joanna Osborne.

Both of these books are sweet & funny – perfect (or maybe purrrrrfect) for all cat lovers or, especially this time of year, gift ideas for any kitty lover on your list.  I love making little toys so, in flipping through these books, I’ve earmarked several I want to cast on immediately.

In fact, I have an extra copy of each of these books that I would love to give away to a fellow kitty lover.  Leave a comment on this blog post, telling me about your kitty (or if you don’t have one, a favorite cat you know).  I’ll randomly draw 2 winners who will each win one of these books!

Rules: One entry per person. Must have a US or Canada mailing address. No purchase necessary. All comments must be posted on THIS blog post. Comments on other blog posts or on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, G+, Ravelry, etc.) will not be valid for this contest. We will close the comments at 7am PST November 4th) and select a winner soon after!

As a note, don’t worry if your comment doesn’t show up right away – because of not-very-nice spammers that slip through our filters, we need to approve each comment. So there might be delay, especially over the weekend – but don’t worry, we’ll get your entry!

I love my orange tabby Milo! He’s interested in my knitting, but doesn’t play (too much) with the yarn…he just sits/sleeps next to me to keep me company.

  2. Pat Parker / November 2, 2013

Love Cats. Have a fantastic six toed little runt who is so lovable and just had a litter that has a cream hairless with large ears. Looks like a little yoda in cream. Grandkids would love Nana to knit up some cats!

  3. Tracy Shook / November 2, 2013

I miss having a cat! I used to have an orange tabby named Ginger that would ALWAYS plop down in my lap, right on TOP of my yarn or needlework, or even a book if I was reading. She ALWAYS had only two kittens at a time, except for one litter, when she had only one female, named Pepper, because she was part Siamese, and looked like pepper, with points! Pepper grew up and had four kittens, and her mother, Ginger had a litter of two at the same time. Ginger would nurse Peppers kittens when Pepper decided she needed to go hunt! I can’t have a cat at the moment, because of where I live, but I sure miss those little balls of furry sweetness!

    • Tracy Shook / November 2, 2013

I would love to try my hand at knitting one! I would love to make Ginger and Pepper in yarn sculptures, that would be such a grand memorial for my two departed sweet girls!

  4. Deborah / November 2, 2013

These are so cute. I never would have imagined knitting something like this.

  5. sylvie vallée / November 2, 2013

I lost one of my cats recently….I know he would not mind if I knit one that looks like him…

    Miaoww gros minou…Je t’aimais bien….

  6. Jane / November 2, 2013

Kitties everywhere! That describes my sisters house. I would love to add a hand knit kitty to her collection.

  7. Karen Patterson / November 2, 2013

My kitty, Saphira, is tolerant of her people. She’s a love bug when she wants to be, but is a pro at kitty aloofness. She has never tried to chew or play with my yarn though!

  8. Molly / November 2, 2013

    I love cats and knitting!

  9. Karen Goshen / November 2, 2013

I have had 1, 2, or 3 cats all my adult life. In fact my e-mail address is made up of the first 4 letters of my (current) three cat’s names, Spencer, Callie, and Parker!.

  10. Vicky B / November 2, 2013

I have four wonderful cats. Rocky is my baby, but a big baby. He runs the house, and horns anyone out of his way if he doesn’t. He has a heart on his chest. His brother is Rabbit alias Fat Cat, because he is a big! cat. He has these big owl eyes, and is real shy and gets his feelings hurt easily. My son’s two cats, Riley, who I call Catfish Riley because he has huge whiskers, He’s a typical yellow striped cat, but big, he’s really sensitve. And the Shadow, a prussian blue, who is very intelligent and is into everything you are, and he’s a pack rat, runs off with my needles, yarn, and anything else not nailed down. And let’s not forget the neighborhood cats, Bruiser, he walks like he’s all muscle, and has a black nose and is black and white. Baby, a brown calico, and lives next door but eats here too. And the ghost cat, poor cat looks like the cat from hades, long shaggy fur in a muted light yellow, in the dark looks like a ghost.

  11. Sallyanne McLaughlin / November 2, 2013

I have always had pets. Until recently, that is. I moved in with my wonderful wonderful Mom a lil while ago, & she is not, nor ever was an animal person. If I could just knit a few pets, then everyone would be purrrrrfectly blissful !!

  12. louisa halmi / November 2, 2013

My kitties love to carry my yarn balls around the house. I’m so glad your project bags have zipper tops to keep my work safe. They are fascinated by the yarn swift and try to help! I’d love to make them companions from yarn.

  13. Caeli / November 2, 2013

I have two kitties- a big sweet boy and a coy little girl. Their names are Sox and Shooz. Wouldn’t trade them for the world no matter how many times a day I have to clean up their vomit lol.

  14. Debbie / November 2, 2013

I have 2 wonderful kitties – Mr. Bill, an 18-pound bundle of love who greats me at the door, and Pebbles, a silky calico who is very particular about who she approaches.

  15. Patricia Brinklow / November 2, 2013

I have 2 black cats that love to pounce on my husband at all hours of the morning while he is sleeping. They also love to run around the apartment at 3am.

  16. Judy Spears / November 2, 2013

I have a very nice cat named Fancy who has been in our family for around 13 years. She looks a lot like the one on the cover of the Knit Your Own Cat book. I would love to have that book to knit her a companion. Thanks for the opportunity.

  17. anna / November 2, 2013

I love these patterns. Sounds like a pile of charity knitting to me!

  18. Brandy / November 2, 2013

My kitty is named Sam, he likes to help me knit by playing with the yarn!! Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  19. Christine / November 2, 2013

Our cat, Melvin, is very special. He’s one of those that people say about him “Well, I don’t really like cats, but this one’s pretty cool.” Friends often ask about him the way they would ask after a child or other relative living with us. He is friendly and has oodles of personality, which I’ve heard can be typical of Lynx Point Siamese. He often follows my husband across the street to the school where he works and waits for him to come home. He might like a woolly friend, at least one that doesn’t bark!

  20. Pam S / November 2, 2013

What a great prize! I have adopted a cat and this would be awesome.

  21. Nini / November 2, 2013

I am OBSSESED with my cat Bumblebee. He’s a 3 year old orange tabby that I got for my birthday. HE. IS. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my cat like crazy.
    The End.

  22. Erika / November 2, 2013

My daughter’s cat is the cutest little cat-he comes (well looks anyway) to a wide variety of lovey nicknames-he’s our cutie little Universe-loved by the whole family-and he loves to ‘help’ people knit!

  23. Bobbie Stevenson / November 2, 2013

I have 3 kitties now. Our kitty Thunder, 30 days short of his 16th birthday passed away after his 2.5 yr battle with cancer. He was our black cat. His girlfriend is gray and white and just had her 16th birthday in Sept. Our Snowball today had her 14th birthday and our Sunny will be 11 April fools day next yr. We love all our kitties but we all miss Thunder so much. The books look so cute. Especially knitting your own kitty, think we would knit another Thunder so he would still be here with us. Happy Cat day to all.

  24. Mauricio / November 2, 2013

I’m a dog person-cats, you can take them or leave them-but my furry little feline grandson is one cute and loving kitty!

  25. Norma / November 2, 2013

This sounds like the perfect project for the start of this years winter knitting season and a great way to have Spooky and Funny Face back in my life. I really miss those old cats.

  26. Sherry Neel / November 2, 2013

My daughter and I rescued our cat from our backyard when her mother abandoned her. She was about 4 weeks old. My daughter wanted to name her “Grape.” We ended up naming her Darci, but Grape became her middle name. We love our Darci Grape!!

  27. Ulli Meng / November 2, 2013

How purrfect! A knitted kitty. After years of having pets, I finally had to commit to a pet-less existence as the new strata rules in the building I am moving into allow no pets.
The upside- I won’t have to worry about my new sofa :)

  28. Dana / November 2, 2013

I came home Halloween night and found a kitten stuck in my chicken area! I rescued her and gave her some loving and she drooled. I made her a quick home in my bathroom while answering the door for treaters, then after I brought her some fresh fish and water, I decided to network with the trick o treaters at my door: “Hey anyone know of a missing cat?” I repeated the question at least 100 times during the evening..then a very late trick or treater rang my bell and it was the cats owner –with relief all over his face! The cat was a new household member and a gift for his handicapped son! I loved having a cat again but my husband is allergic so maybe I can knit one!

  29. Svetlana / November 2, 2013

One of my kitties, Asya, share my passion for the nice yarn and play with any ball she can find. Off course, I let her play with, she is my crochet and knitting body.

  30. Shirley Gilmore / November 2, 2013

My favorite cat was Stormy. He helped us keep the horses calm and was quite the man about the farm. He was a deep dark and stormy grey and had brilliant golden eyes. He was very independent and purred like thunder.

  31. Barbara Y / November 2, 2013

My nickname is Cat and I would love one of these books. I can’t pick my favorite cat since all hold a special place in my heart. Even the ones who are a bit “tetchy”. I love their independent spirit and sense of curiosity.

  32. Shelley Nunemaker / November 2, 2013

I own four feral cats. A mother and two kittens (now grown) and Ram, who was found under a coworker’s house. Ram is an over weight bully cat who nobody will play with. So, to entertain himself, he grabs his back legs and kicks himself in the head!! I need to knit him a cat that will be his friend for life. Won’t you help?

  33. Nancy / November 2, 2013

I currently have 10 cats that I call my own. Only 3 are allowed in the house. We live in the country so they all enjoy a safe outside area. I fill their bowls with dry food every morning. At night, whatever is left is eaten by the racoons, oppossums, skunks, and neighborhood dogs. One time we even had a turkey visit us.

  34. Haley / November 2, 2013

I have two kitties. A medium hair tabby named O’Malley who is almost 14 years old and loves everyone. Then I have 4 year old Cullen who is a solid black shorthair. I bottle fed him after his litter was found in a parking lot at 5 weeks old. He only likes me and is downright mean to everyone else.

  35. Hind / November 3, 2013

My kids have been asking for a cat, but we can’t get one at this time. Maybe a knitted cat will make them happy. Hope I win!

  36. jacky / November 3, 2013

    oooooooo I hope I win a book

  37. Grace F / November 3, 2013

When I was a child, I had a cat named “Elvis”. He got the name because he was gorgeous and constantly ran from adoring fans. He wouldn’t let anyone else but me near him, but he would snuggle up to me and make me feel like I ruled the world.

  38. Sharon M2 / November 3, 2013

I have 3 cats. So there’s always something going on: feed me, pet me, let me out, let me in!

  39. Fran Albert / November 3, 2013

Minnie is our creamy Himalayan cat. She was found filthy and half starved. She was so small we named her Minnie. Pumpkin, she just came up on our deck and jumped up in my lap.

  40. Barbara C / November 3, 2013

I may have enough actual cat hair from our rescued kitties to knit a project from the book! lol

  41. Phyllis Abell / November 3, 2013

Knit your own cat has been on my wish list for sometime. Would love to knit one up.

  42. Suzei Povlich / November 3, 2013

I have never made little toys with knitting.. I have 4 little boys who would love to learn with me :)

  43. Melissa Hammer / November 3, 2013

I have two cats who love mischief! About a week ago I came home from a local yarn shop “knit night” and wasn’t feel ing well so I left my project bag sitting out on the kitchen table and went to bed. When I woke up in the morning my project was strewn throughout my kitchen, my living room, and down the steps into my hallway. Both cats looked at me with such pride. Gotta’ love ’em!

  44. Renelle Major / November 3, 2013

    I love cats :)

  45. Susie Schmidt / November 3, 2013

My little cat, Motor, used to help me knit… he would lie next to me and play with the yarn. He lived for almost 20 wonderful years. I’d love to knit myself a cat to resemble my Motor. :)

  46. LauraL / November 3, 2013

I have one indoor kitty and I’ve lost count of how many abandoned & feral cats that I provide with food and water. We had an electrical storm this summer, it took 4 days before we got our power turned back on. During that time I slept with my bedroom window open and the cats figured out where to find me at night- so now whenever the food or water dish is empty one of them gets on my window sill, scratches at the screen and demands that I get up and go fill it. And of course, I do.

  47. Novia / November 3, 2013

Boomer, Scooby, and Stanley give it 3 paws up with their sincerest hugs and scratches.

  48. Hilary Davison / November 3, 2013

Having been forced to leave my red point Siamese , Paprika Valentine, ‘Rikki” for short, with my daughter in the UK when we emigrated to US I would love to make a replica but do not have a pattern to follow – this would be great!

  49. Annie Thompson / November 3, 2013

I’ve been a cat person my whole life. Currently, we have two; Oscar the golden tabby, and Fawkes the white and grey monster. Oscar is very sweet and affectionate, very attached to me. Fawkes is much more independent and his hobbies include meowing demandingly and chasing the much larger dog around the house.

  50. Carol Majahad / November 3, 2013

I bought my daughter the Knit Your Own Cat for Christmas last year. At 17, she had done a lot of knitting but had never followed an actual pattern–this book motivated her to learn how. Many kitties later, she still receives requests for these little masterpieces for gifts. As for our real kitty, Sterling, she loves knitted cat toys better than any commercial item and often “chooses” the yarn while I am knitting another project.
