It’s October 1st, which means it’s my favorite month of the year! Every since I was young, I’ve loved October – cooler days, falling leaves, pumpkin everything, and especially all sorts of spooky things to celebrate Halloween! Whether it’s listening to an old favorite song, watching a favorite movie or visiting our local haunted houses, every October I’m ready to celebrate.
And a lot of our IDP designers have gotten into the spirit – check out some of these great patterns to get started on before the 31st shows up.
First off, the marvelous Joanna Rankin has several patterns that are perfect this time of year.
As the coordinator of our IDP collections, the biggest “problem” with my job is the fact that I am constantly surrounded by patterns I want to make RIGHT NOW. Case in point: last month we released Reclaimed (where I immediately cast on for Addison – I’m about halfway through the body) and the Wool of the Andes Collection (where I have the yarn already for Insulate). Now we’ve come out with probably my favorite collection to date – I want to knit everything!
When I was a nerdy little kid (as opposed the nerdy adult I am now), I LOVED the Choose Your Own Adventures books! Remember those? You are the protagonist of the story and determine the outcome by making decisions every few pages or so. I ate these up in my elementary and Jr High years and was excited to learn that my nephew loves them too so I could pass them along to the younger generation!
Well, obviously, I’m not the only one who loved these books, as one of my favorite designers Lee Meredith has a brand new eBook based on them!
Some of my favorite days at work are photo shoot days. Every catalog cycle we log anywhere between 1-4 location shoots and 2-5 in-house studio days where we shoot tools, garments, yarn, books and all sorts of other things that crop up along the way. Each kind of shoot has this moment when everything just clicks and Amy and I can get that “perfect shot” that was exactly what we had in mind. Every once in a while we have a shot that totally exceeds our expectations and makes me actually clap my hands and gasp when I see the image on the screen.
I wanted to take a minute and shine the spotlight on some of my favorite photos that we’ve taken recently that maybe didn’t make it into the catalog or are Independent Designer’s patterns that I’m especially proud of. Enjoy!
The wonderful Kalurah Hudson has been a long time IDP designer as well as a contributor to our First Light collection and was a huge help in getting KP Crochet started. She visited us for a couple of days and filmed so many crochet tutorials and was an early tester of our new yarn Curio. We asked her if she would be interested in sharing a crochet story for the blog and what we received was such a personal, beautiful story. Enjoy.
In celebration of the release of Knit Picks FIRST Crochet thread “Curio”, I wanted to share with you my own journey into the discovery of Crochet.
Since we’ve been on a crochet kick here (especially with our new yarn and new collection), it’s only fitting that the newest Holla Knits release is all about crochet as well!
This collection, like the Holla Knits‘ previous ones, contains 6 fun and fashionable patterns featuring up & coming indie designers. Each pattern is knit in two different yarns and we are delighted that there are 4 patterns in Knit Picks yarns!
Michelle Miller has been part of the IDP program from the very beginning – her Knitting Project Bag has been one of our most popular patterns! I’ve known Michelle for several years now and last summer we discussed doing a collection of her beautiful lace work. She came up with a gorgeous proposal and the result is the stunning Ballerinas in Pink collection!
Michelle was inspired by the artist Degas’s series of impressionistic paintings from the turn of the century. (see some of the artwork here). Using a similar color palette, all of Michelle’s designers are stunningly beautiful and a wonderful addition to any lace lover’s pattern collection.
In honor of KP Crochet’s launch, the Knit Picks staff is taking this week to focus on all our favorite, hook-tastic products and projects.
I, like my fellow coworkers, love to crochet. So I’m so excited to present Serenity, our first very first crochet collection!
This gorgeous book has 8 patterns by 8 different independent designers and I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to work on. We wanted a variety of types of patterns included and we especially wanted to include garments, which is somewhat difficult to find for crocheters. We also wanted to highlight lighter weight yarns – everything from lace to worsted.
This week we have two adorable free patterns from the wonderful Natty Knits!
First up is Baby’s First Football.
Surrounded all my life by football fans, I think this is adorable and wish I had it when I was making a few baby gifts a while back for some football families. Even if you’re not a football fan, the size of the football is a great size for babies & small children to grasp and play with.
Have you checked out our newest kits yet?
The 2 versions of the Splendiferous Stripes Shawl kit were rather fun for us – the pattern is by our former coworker Angela Modzelewski (who we all miss very much!). But even as she’s gone on to her new projects, she keeps in touch since she has such fun patterns in the IDP program!
