Autumn Color Palette Inspiration

The leaves are starting to change, the air is crisp in the mornings, and Pumpkin Spice has bombarded my taste buds. That means autumn has arrived! The cool air has me reaching for my wool sweaters and cozy beanies and my project lineup is bulking up. Find your next autumn color palette for a knitting project, inspired by this time of year.

Warm Tones Autumn Color Palette

An autumn color palette: At the top, the inspiration photo consists of a snowy mountain peak behind a hill covered in blazing orange-leaved trees. Below, five yarn swatches from Wool of the Andes in the following colors: burnt orange, orangey-brown, light clear blue, medium foggy blue, and a slate blue.

The first autumn color palette is inspired by fall foliage. My love for orange is reinvigorated every fall when leaves change. The contrast of orange trees with blue skies on clear days is so inspiring to me! It instantly makes me feel calm and comfy. Our classic wool yarn, Wool of the Andes, knits crisp sweaters with excellent stitch definition … the perfect garment to throw on for your autumn stroll outside.

Featured colors: Persimmon Heather 24280, Rooibos Heather 25642, Lake Ice Heather 23898, Opal Heather 25645, and Icicle Heather 25992.

Flannels & Beanies Autumn Color Palette

An autumn color palette: To the left, the inspiration photo consists of a waterfall against dark rocks falling into a pool that touches rocks where a person in a red plaid flannel and black beanie is standing. To the right, four yarn swatches from Twill in the following colors: deep blue, dark gray, dark red, and gold.

My outfits really shine during the Fall. I feel most comfortable in Levi’s, flannels and beanies. Throw on a classic sweater and it will take you right into winter. The yarn I recommend for classic wardrobe staples? Twill!

Twill is a superwash Merino yarn with 3-ply twist and satisfying density which makes it gorgeous for intricate cables and stockinette stitch. The sheen and next-to-skin softness combined with it’s machine washable convenience keeps me reaching for it in my stash again and again.

Featured colors: Dungaree 27931, Graphite Heather 27927, Crabapple 27933, and Gold Rush 27934

Coffee, Lattes & Tea Galore Color Palette

A neutral autumn color palette: At the top, the inspiration photo consists of a top-down view of eight cups of coffee in various shades of dark brown to tan to very light cream. Below, six yarn swatches from Simply Alpaca in the following colors: dark gray, dark brown, brown-cream twist, tan, tan-cream twist, and light latte cream.

I’m as basic as they come; give me a Pumpkin Spice Latte, and I will have a good day. A yummy warm drink on a cold day is like a hug! There is also something about the rich, neutral gradient of coffee treat colors that instantly draw me in. I think that is one of the first things that drew me into Simply Alpaca yarn, which makes up this neutral autumn color palette.

The special thing about this yarn is that is it the color of the natural fiber; no dyes or bleach are used to process the yarn. Paired with the loose ply, softness, and natural warmth, anything you knit with Simply Alpaca will feel like a big bear hug.

Featured colors: Alexis 27492, Alton 27488, Alton Twist 28705, Aldous 27486, Aldous Twist 28704, and Alfonse 27487.

Halloween Kitties Autumn Color Palette

A neutral autumn color palette: To the left, the inspiration photo consists of a black cat with gold eyes in front of a tan blanket. To the right, four yarn swatches from Biggo yarn in the following colors: black-gray, tan, very light gray, and cream.

Although I am not a huge Halloween person, I do love some ghost stories and superstitions. But I would rather snuggle a black cat than watch a horror movie! Give me a chunky knit blanket and a kitty to snuggle, and my day will be made. My favorite bulky yarn to knit while snuggling my kitty? Biggo!

I have made countless accessories and a cardigan with Biggo, and it really is no surprise why I love it so much. The superwash merino and nylon make it unbelievably soft but also machine washable. The light and lofty 2-ply knit to a squishy fabric and the bulky weight makes projects knit up in no time.

Featured colors: Asphalt Heather 25624, Rabbit Heather 26086, Dove Heather 25615, and Bare Biggo 26089.

Fall Baking Color Palette

An autumn color palette: To the left, the inspiration photo consists of a dark blue background where a hand is shaking cocoa powder onto a rustic chocolate cake. To the right, five yarn swatches from Gloss yarn in the following colors: Navy blue, dark sea blue, gray blue, gold, and rust.

This autumn color palette is inspired by baking! What I appreciate most about cooler weather is that I can bake to my heart’s content without making the house too hot. My first order of business is to find a great Cider donut recipe (If you have one you love, leave a link in the comments!). I also can’t wait to make a decadent chocolate cake to treat myself to.

Another luxurious treat? Our Merino and silk yarn, Gloss. The mix of fiber takes dye very well so we are able to get rich, lavish, saturated colors that are perfect for fall. Velvety texture, multiple weights, drape, and stitch definition makes Gloss perfect for any project. P.S. Gloss comes in three different weights (lace, fingering, and DK).

Featured colors: Captain 28589, River Rock 28590, Harvest 28594, and Masala 24719.

I hope these autumn color palettes inspire you to snuggle up with a soft yarn and to finish up some WIP that you were too busy to finish this summer! Stay tuned for more inspiration on our blog, Instagram, and Facebook.

Fall Staff Projects

Knit Picks Fall Fibers

It’s been a bit since our last staff project post. Most of us have been up to our ears in traveling to shows, developing new exciting products, and in general just resisting the temptation to stay inside all day and make ALL the things. Regardless of how busy we are, you know we spend an inordinate amount of time with our pattern queue and massive yarn stash. Here’s a look at what has been coming off of our needles around the office this fall!

Kate’s Shifty Shawl

Knit Picks Staff Projects

Color Shifting Shawl in Hawthorne yarns – Lovejoy Multi, Kerns, Kettle Slate, and Sock Lab Specimen 1809.03

There’s nothing quite like a lovely shawl draped over ones’ shoulders to imbue an air of worldliness and overall fancy lady-ness. While I’m not quite ready to don elegant lacy shawls made with exquisite silky fibers (I don’t trust myself to not snag them on ev-er-y-thing), I AM ready to up my accessories game and sport a modern shawl or two around town.  The easy lace portion of this pattern was very beginner-friendly, and the staggered striping of changing colors kept me interested while I plugged away at this project every night.

Alexis’ Seed Stitch Frenzy

Knit Picks Staff Project

Seed Stitch Cowl knit in new Capra colors (held double) and Bare Shimmer Bulky

There’s a running joke around the office pertaining to our Merchandise Buyer, Alexis, having an “issue”. That issue being that she is producing massive quantities of the Seed Stitch Cowl like some sort of super-human knitting machine! Granted, 95% of the cowls she makes are gifts for her loved ones. We like to kid her that she should, just once, pile them all on at one time and let us take a picture. Fingers crossed she says yes.

Hillary’s First Colorwork Adventure

Knit Picks staff Projects

Arri Hat knit in Biggo from the Under 200 Collection.

I have been wanting to try my hand at colorwork, and the Arri Hat was the perfect project for me! Fashionable and something I will wear all winter, the Arri Hat is a great hat! And surprisingly, colorwork isn’t as scary as I thought!

Look for our next staff project post sometime around the holidays, when some of our resident expert knitters will share their most recent creations. Until then, happy knitting!

We Heart Fall!

“Fact: Fall is the best time of the year.”

Dwight Schrute

knit Picks Fall Palette inspiration

Okay. That is not an actual quote as Dwight Schrute is not an actual person, but I’m pretty confident that if he was real, he would totally make that statement. Needless to say, I would agree with him 1000%. Perhaps the thing that I love most about fall is the soul fortifying relief that it offers after the sultry days of summer. Having grown up in the high desert as a child, I relish the opportunity as an adult to surround myself with the spectacle of deciduous trees in autumn. Between the crisp, earthy air and brilliantly colored landscape, my nesting (and creative) tendencies kick into high gear.

In the spirit of Fall and all things Hygge, the KP staff have put together our semi-official list of our favorite fall things.

Enjoy!

Hillary’s Fall Knits

Fall is the perfect time to channel your Hygge mood. Knitwear just screams cozy and we have some sweater patterns that are begging to be knit and worn around your house this Fall!

Caddington Wrap

Knit Picks CAddington Wrap
This cocoon style sweater is knit in luxurious Capretta yarn, making it Hygge approved! Ward off the morning chill or lounge around your house in this flattering sweater.

Bristol Afghan

Knit Picks Bristol Afghan
This gorgeous, textured afghan is meant to snuggle under when the temperature drops. Knit in a bulky yarn, this afghan knits quickly but the basic cable design makes it a fancy classic.

Weft Wrap

Knit Picks Weft Wrap
This thick and cozy basket weave stitch is worked entirely in knit and purl stitches with a simple garter stitch border to frame it. The bias slant, made by increases and decreases at the beginning and end of every other row, make this wrap have a gorgeous drape. Take Hygge on the go and add this to your wardrobe or curl up with a good book with it!

Stacey’s Reads

Fall for me means curling up with a good book when the weather turns nasty outside. Whether it’s a brand new book, an old favorite or a lively audiobook, you can bet I’ll be lost in book more often than not. (Plus, I’ve situated my knitting space where I’m able to prop my book so I can read while working on projects.) Here are some favorites, new & old, I’ll be diving into.

It’s been far too long since there has been a new Cormoran Strike novel and I am so excited that Lethal White has finally been released. Written by Robert Galbraith (also known as J.K. Rowling), the Strike novels are engaging and suspenseful, with well written, intriguing characters and unexpected twists and turns. I’m trying not to read it all in one sitting, as I know it’ll be another long wait, but it’s hard to put down. If audiobooks are more your thing, the Strike novels are also fantastic and read by the same narrator throughout. (The recent TV series was also quite good).

Kate Atkinson, probably my current favorite author, also has a new book out this fall, but a book I’ve read multiple times is her stunning novel Life After Life. I’m planning on rereading it again this fall, because I always discover something new with each rereading. Atkinson uses an unique narrative style telling the life story of Ursula Todd, exploring how how small decisions can sometimes impact the future. It’s brilliant and heartbreaking and a wonderful novel.

Finally, as I’ve mentioned above, I like to often give my eyes a break and plug into an audiobook. My favorites are always full cast recording and I’ve not found anything better than the His Dark Materials trilogy from Phillip Pullman. Narrated by Pullman himself (who has a wonderful grandfather-y voice that I love), this 3 book series tells the story of young Lyra and Will in a fantastical other worldly setting. Filled with adventures, heartbreak and philosophical questions, it’s the one fantasy world I would happily go live in (with few caveats.) The audiobooks are marvelous, with over 20 actors playing the characters, tied together with Pullmans brilliant narrative. These audiobooks (and the companion books) have gotten me through a long knitting session many times!

Kate’s Tunes

Oddly enough, I am at my most content when I am listening to sad music. I blame it on growing up listening to bands like The Smiths and Cocteau Twins (thanks big sister). If you’re in the mood for melancholy, check out some of my favorite songs to curl up and cry to (I kid, I kid) http://bit.ly/KnitPicksFallMusic

Hannah’s Eats & Drinks

Smitten Kitchen’s Chocolate Dutch Baby
https://smittenkitchen.com/2017/01/chocolate-dutch-baby/
I’m nothing if not predictable. So, sticking with all things cozy, easy, and chocolate I highly recommend this dutch baby pancake recipe. It’s so easy to whip up on a moment’s notice, smells heavenly and looks gorgeous as it comes out of the oven. Keeping things Hygge means simplicity, coziness and togetherness; basically the definition of every dutch baby pancake recipe!

Smitten Kitchen’s Decadent Hot Chocolate Mix
https://smittenkitchen.com/2014/12/decadent-hot-chocolate-mix/
This is my go-to recipe for both stocking my pantry and also gifting later on in the holiday season! This is such an easy recipe and is wonderfully customizable. Add a touch of cayenne pepper for some spice or vanilla bean for extra coziness.

Alexis’ Flicks

For a brief moment in college I dabbled with the idea of being a cinematographer, cementing my affinity for celluloid. What better time to indulge in your favorite movies then when the crisp fall winds start to howl through the falling leaves,  and that stash you (I) have ignored all summer needs some love?  Here are three of my go-to Fall classics.

Number one my list, and in my heart, is Arsenic and Old Lace. This 1944 Frank Capra classic is a delightful and endearing romp through the macabre. Cary Grant plays Mortimer Brewster who discovers on the day of his wedding that his doting Aunties are actually serial murderers with a benevolent twist.  I’d say try your hand at some lace work while watching it but you might drop a stitch during a scene stealing pronouncement of CHARGE!

I have a thing for classics so next up of course is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 Thriller Rear Window. Jimmy Stewart stars as LB, a photographer that is wheelchair bound after breaking his leg and occupies himself spying on his neighbors from his NYC high rise, believing one of them killed his wife. He could have stayed out of trouble if only he knew how to knit or crochet.  The mystery of “Did he or didn’t he?”, and those LB enlists to uncover the answers make for an exciting afternoon on the couch.

Fun fact: it was all filmed on the Paramount Studio Lot, where they had to dig 20 feet down to give the illusion of the 60ft high apartment buildings since the studio space wasn’t to Hitchcock’s liking.

My last favorite movie to watch in the fall is not a black and white classic, although I could surely rattle off a hundred more, nor does it involve murder (amazingly). WALL-E is my final recommendation. This is my favorite Pixar release. I absolutely love the world that they create for WALL-E. It’s so dense with beautiful imagery and who doesn’t love a Robot love story? I am charmed by the quietness of the film and quirky like robot homage to Johnny 5 from Short Circuit. I’m inspired to make cozy scarfs and wraps for the ones I love when I watch this.

There you have it. Our collective list of all things indulgent and comforting, from our nook to yours. Stay cozy out there everyone!

New Capretta Superwash!

We love luxurious Capretta! What is not to love? The superbly soft cashmere yarn is perfect for special projects, small accessories or if you really want to treat yourself, a sweater or cute cardi. Now it is perfect for socks because Capretta now comes in SUPERWASH!

Capretta is Capra’s fingering weight sibling and is a blend of 80% Fine Merino/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon. The addition of nylon makes it ideal for super soft socks but it’s also well suited for fine-gauge knits like scarves, cowls, mitts and even lightweight yet warm cardigans. It is now available in 15 new, sophisticated colors. In honor of the new color palette, I put together some fall color inspiration below!

Library Color Palette

This gorgeous shot of well loved books had the perfect mix of rich jewel tones for some fall knitting. Mix these colors together for a pair of fun, striped Spring Street Socks! They will be so cozy you will want to wear them well into Winter.

Dried Flowers

This photo is for monochromatic lovers! The colors create a cozy yet ethereal mood. For a sweater you can pair with any color, knit up a Caddington Wrap to ward off the morning chill or to lounge during lazy Autumn mornings.

Fall Blooms

Dark, dramatic colors were pulled from this gorgeous photo! They would be perfect for lux accessories such as the Leaf Wreath Cowl.

Frosty Morning

Here in the Pacific Northwest, our frosty mornings have quite the bite to them. Bundle up in the Adelaida Hat with the softest Merino/Cashmere blend yarn.

Pressed Petals

There is something romantic about a book full of pressed flower petals. This color palette would look great with any Autumn outfit, adding a warmth or pop of color too! The Isabel Cowl is a basic cowl made enchanting with a deceptively simple motif that would feel amazing knit in Capretta.

Autumn arrangements

Blush pinks, creams and stark white make this palette so dreamy. When paired with Emerald Green, this icy palette is perfect for Fall. The lacy pattern of the Lotus Lace Cardigan would be so lovely in these colors.

I hope these Autumn color palettes have inspired you to grab some of the new superwash Capretta!

Clove & Spice Knit and Crochet Pumpkin Free Pattern

55532220

Link to the Clove & Spice Knit and Crochet Pumpkin Pattern

The rains are here and I know it’s time to start thinking about pumpkins, golden leaves and early frosts. My favorite pumpkin patch has started sneaking tempting images of ripe pumpkins into my Facebook feed and my Pinterest is filling up with October crafts (beeswax-dipped leaves, anyone?) so it’s definitely time to get my fall crafting started! To celebrate the cooler weather and changing seasons I whipped up a quick little pattern with instructions for both knit and crochet pumpkins.

Both versions of the Clove & Spice Pumpkins are great beginner patterns with written pattern instructions and photos illustrating how to create those chubby little ridges. These little fellas are the perfect size to perch on a book shelf or to add into a little tabletop tableau (the knit Spice pumpkin has a 10.5″ circumference and the crochet Clove pumpkin has a 13.5″ circumference) and there’s enough yarn in one ball of Wool of the Andes Sport to make two pumpkins.

I can’t think of a cuter way to welcome in the fall season! What are your favorite cold-weather crafts? Are you gearing up for a trip to the pumpkin patch too? I can’t wait
