WeCrochet publishes a quarterly magazine featuring patterns, interviews, education, and inspiration.

Tacia said in a review of WeCrochet Magazine Issue 1: “I received my copy in the mail and was completely blown away. I’ve never really been a big fan of crochet magazines because they all seem to have the same layout and never seemed fresh and innovative. WeCrochet hit it out the park with this magazine. The pictures are so vibrant and there are a ton of crochet patterns in the magazine that also includes a very detail schematic rendering. I would HIGHLY recommend this magazine to a fellow maker. “

Color Crush: Crochet Shawl Collection

When Spring rolls around, I love wrapping up in my lightweight, cozy knits while out running errands or meeting friends for brunch. Our newest shawl collection is just my style! Bright, graphic patterns with a modern touch, these crochet patterns are just as much fun to make as they are to wear!

My favorite pattern from this fun collection is the Boothbay Harbor Shawlette. The lovely, smokey colors of Hawthorne used with the simple 2-row repeat makes this an easy yet interesting crochet project. I actually made this pattern in our Baby Alpaca and Silk yarn, Diadem! It has such a pretty drape and shine that it elevates the shawl and makes it a touch fancier.

If you want to make a statement, the Chevron Pop Shawl is for you! Featuring our cheerful Hawthorne yarn in Parkrose, Berry Smoothie, and Grants Pass, this shawl combines simple stitches to make a bold and graphic shawl.

For a little more warmth, wrap yourself in this luxurious shawl called Across the Andes! Knit in Andean Treasure, this shawl is made using Half Double Crochet stitches, Double Crochet stitches and a fun Tuft stitch. These stitches will take you on a journey!

Color Crush has 6 shawl patterns that will help you stay warm when out and about in gorgeous spring weather. I can’t wait to see your creations from this playful collection!

Come Home to Crochet

If you are an avid crocheter, you know the struggle to find cute, somewhat modern and easy to follow patterns. Come Home To Crochet offers 7 home decor patterns that range from snuggly blankets to modern pillows.

Darling Dinner Set by Knit Picks

If you are a new crocheter, many of the patterns are perfect beginner projects. The Darling Dinner Set is made with the broomstick lace technique that makes the project look extra fancy. Practice your edging technique and add a pop of color with the simple edge. Using CotLin yarn, the placemats are soft, durable and machine washable, making them perfect housewarming gifts.

Daisy Chain by Knit Picks

Blankets

There are also 3 gorgeous and very different blanket patterns. The Daisy Chain blanket has such a wonderful weight to it. Made out of Shine, it is unbelievably soft but is still machine washable! The flower chains and stripe effect surrounded by simple lace edging makes this an eye catching blanket. The stitch pattern is created in two parts, using half circle cluster stitches and shells. Don’t be intimidated by this complex looking stitch! The repeat makes this blanket a breeze to crochet.

Woven Baby Blanket by Knit Picks

Another one of the blanket patterns is perfect for babies! Crocheted in Comfy yarn and in a worsted weight, the Woven Baby Blanket crochets quickly. The interesting texture is created by mixing stitches to create a woven look. Any new parent would love to receive this blanket for their baby!

Pillows

And to add some color to your couches, there are 2 pillow patterns included in this new book! My favorite is the Mandala Pillow. By working two panels  back and forth in a slip stitch pattern and then sewed together, this project is so much fun to crochet! The colorful mandala is crocheted in joined rounds and then seamed onto one side of the pillow. I can’t wait to make my own; it will match my home decor perfectly!

We LOVE Crochet!

Crochet is such a fun craft! Although I am not a confident knitter, crochet will always have my heart. I love how easy it is to play with color, how fast it is to finish projects, and the fun projects you can easily create with crochet. I thought that I would pay tribute to my love of crochet in today’s post by highlighting some awesome modern books and patterns.

Modern Crochet

I love that this craft is evolving constantly and I am enamored by the modern patterns being released by crocheters. Two books I am loving are Modern Crochet and Modern Tapestry Crochet.

Modern Tapestry Crochet explores the easy basics of tapestry crochet and has 20 gorgeous patterns with geometric patterned motifs. The geometric designs elevates this tried-and-true craft to a modern craft. I can’t wait to start the cowl featured on the cover. I think it will be my go-to Fall accessory.

Modern Crochet by Molla Mills gets me so excited to pick up my hook! There is something about functional projects that make me want to instantly make them. From baskets to cord covers, this book will inspire you to organize your house with crochet projects. I have been wanting to make a pouf/cushion footstool and the Pastille Cushions is the perfect pattern for me to finally make one.

Crochet Garments

I always reach for my knitting needles when starting a hand-made garment. But the new free crochet pattern, Oceanic Breeze Shawlette, has me reaching for my crochet hooks and excited for cool Autumn weather. The stripes give this shawl a modern look and makes the color combinations endless!

Not your Grandma’s Afghan

I have only made a few crochet afghans, as I usually find the patterns do not fit into my home decor style. But the Fireside Gingham Afghan and Pillow is just the opposite! Not only is is simple and fun to make, it would fit into any rustic and farmhouse decor. The colors are easy to change to get a different look too! I will be curling up on the couch this Winter with this cozy project.

Teaching the Littles to Crochet

My favorite people in the world are my nieces and nephews. As such, it only made sense to teach them one of my favorite activities in the world: crocheting!

Teaching Kids to Crochet | KnitPicks.com

Caden was the first to pick up a hook. This boy knows how to craft right: in pajamas, by the fire. Only thing missing is a glass of wine (or juice, in his 7-yr old case). He worked on generic swatches for a while, eventually graduating to a very fetching Brava scarf for his bear.

Natalie is the quintessential first born, driven by a fierce need for organization and symmetry in all things. I think she derived as much pleasure from organizing these Brava blankets as she did crocheting them.

If you were to peek out the back window of her house, you are more likely than not to catch a glimpse of her doing her favorite thing: multi tasking. Getting her daily dose of Vitamin D and listening to an audio book, all whilst crocheting a Mighty Stitch Super Bulky scarf for her cousin. Watch out, folks. This girl is going places.

One delightfully cozy, rainy afternoon, we had a crochet party on the couch.

Natalie worked on a lovely Brava blanket for my cousin’s new baby,

and Caden made two very adorable dishcloths out of Dishie. They just make my heart swoon.

Bonus points for Caden: not only did he crochet a dishcloth, but he also made sure the baby didn’t roll off the couch. What a guy!

Charlotte, fourth in line and not quite so task-oriented as her older sister, is less motivated to develop her fiber talents. I tried tempting her with the baby-soft Preciosa yarn, but she was content with just sunning her bald head.

And conquering her soccer ball. Oh well. I’ll get her someday!

Teaching the kids to crochet not only allows gives them a chance to exercise patience, creativity and pride of workmanship, but also offers a valuable, tangible moment carved out in an increasingly digital and overly cerebral world. It’s beautiful to see them plan the project (I get many yarn requests), earnestly crochet it and then gift it with much pride to the lucky recipient. I hope to continue to foster their joy in the creative experience, and someday teach my own littles to do the same!

The Winter Blues Have Arrived!

I’m embracing the long winter months ahead with a delicious wintery blue Brava project. Like most everyone, I have a major crush on any rainbow palette – be it a full-on Crayola extravaganza or a subtle monochromatic transition. I was delighted when we expanded our Brava acrylic worsted palette to include just the perfect hues for my dream crochet blanket.

Brava Blues
Aren’t they gorgeous? In case you’re wondering, they are as follows:
Left to right: Marina, Cornflower,Peacock, Tidepool, Silver, Dove Heather, Clarity, White

I’m planning on doing a chevron pattern, like this one. Should create a lovely, wave-like effect!

What is your favorite set of colors? Any particular rainbow combinations you favor?

Accessory Weather

Those frosted windshields and travel mugs full of hot tea mean that it’s accessory weather! Fingerless mittens have come out of storage weeks ago, I’ve started carrying around a slouchy hat in my purse for windy emergencies this week and I just sorted through my chest of knit sweaters. I’ve been pretty steadily increasing the winter wardrobes of my extended family and friends every Christmas and this year is certainly no different. I wanted to share a few of my recent favorites to add to your own gift list!

I heard that Tincanknits would be coming to my local yarn shop in a few months ago so I popped over to look at their patterns on Ravelry as a little refresher before I made a trip to see the projects in person. I fell in love with their Antler Hat pattern for a second time and decided to make one for my mother in Full Circle Worsted Ponderosa. I love the combination of simple repeats in this cable pattern and the lovely stitch definition of Full Circle. The single ply yarn makes such a bouncy, cozy fabric!

More recently, I whipped up a pair of Stacey’s Semplice Fingerless Mitts (free pattern!) in my favorite yellow: Turmeric in Swish DK. It doesn’t get more autumnal than that. I was able to do them two-at-a-time which means that both thumbs actually ARE the same length (I problem of mine when it comes to mittens). Unisex and super versatile – this pattern has been in heavy rotation lately as I try to whittle down my Christmas gift list!

Lastly, I wanted to try my hand a crochet beanie. I still have some Chroma Worsted samples kicking around in my stash and I just love how it crochets up. I discovered Rohn Strong‘s great patterns on Ravelry and tried my hand at his Grizzly hat pattern. It’s got just the right amount of slouch and fits perfectly, this pattern is definitely added to my “second time around” list for last minute gifts. I’ve got my eye on a ball of Chroma Worsted Soft Rock for one and Midwinter for another.

Are you still working on big gift projects for Christmas or are you trying to fill in some gaps with smaller accessories too? I still have one more sweater to get crackin’ on but then it’ll be smooth sailing for the rest of the month!
