Quick boot toppers

I invested in a pair of Frye Boots that I have been able to wear quite a lot this “summer” thanks to our unusually chilly weather. I love these boots! I want to wear them every day! I was even inspired to finally shorten a blue jean skirt I have had for years but kept wearing too long. When I wore my boots with my shortened skirt a couple of weeks ago, I decided that I needed boot toppers.

I raided the office stash of Wool of the Andes and grabbed two balls of Camel Heather. I was knitting under the blessings of the knitting goddesses because everything worked out perfectly even though I was definitely “winging it”.

The plan was to knit a pretty section, knit a couple of rounds of purl for a turn over section and then a few inches of ribbing to hold the boot topper on my calf.

As long as you understand that my instructions will be a bit “loose”, I will share my steps with you.

Loosely cast on 72 stitches. I used a set of DPNs in a size that I figured would give me the 5 stitch-per-inch suggestion for worsted weight yarns. You could use DPNs or Magic Loop or even knit two at the same time.

Rounds 1 & 2: k4, p2
Round 3: 2-over-2 front cross, p2

Repeat rounds 1 -3 five more times for a total of six twists.

Next four rounds: k4, p2

Purl 2 rounds

Work k2, p2 ribbing for at least 5 inches

Cast off loosely.

Confession – I plan on knitting several more of these in a variety of colors. Maybe in Wool of the Andes Tweed. They are so much fun!
