New Year’s Resolutions

Now that Christmas and Hanukkah are over and New Year’s is just around the corner, it’s that time of year when I always find myself making lists of all the things I want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Teaching myself to knit colorwork is at the top of my list for 2011, I’ve been inspired by all the beautiful colorwork patterns we see from IDP designers each week! I polled everyone else in the office to see what fiber-related resolutions they’re making for 2011. Looks like we’re going to have a busy year around here.

Our resolutions run the whole gamut from ambitious to basic to what some might even call wishful thinking!

“My
number one goal is learning to weave –  I’m taking a class at Madrona in
February! I also want to learn the different dying techniques – hand paint, kettle
dye, maybe play around with making natural dyes… And I also want to create
more patterns...” Kim, merchandising
manager

“Weave
a whole rug. Finish carding and spinning Cher the Sheep’s fleece – I bought it
at the Aurora Spinning Guild show over a year and a half ago! Shop more from my
stash, it’s starting to eat my entire house!” Alison, director of Knit
Picks

“I’m
just a beginner, so I would like to be able to know how to tell when I’ve twisted
my stitches;  to know how to pick up dropped stitches properly, to learn
how to knit continental style, and to knit as fast
as y’all can without even looking at what you’re doing!! Oh, I’d also like to
accomplish world peace. :)” -Colleen, accounting

“Big
time stashbusting! I also want to do a lot of charity knitting (as
always).” -Kerin, designer

“I
am currently working on several crochet projects, as
well as several sewing projects.  I would like to learn to knit, but I’m
not sure I’m willing to commit to a ‘resolution.’ ” -Cindy, accounting

“My knitting resolution is to progress from making simple scarfves to
something more complicated, like hats! And to actually
finish a project…” -Sarah, marketing

“My
resolution is to learn to knit right-handed.  I currently knit left-handed
using the Continental style, and I’m getting tired of having to read patterns
‘backwards’.  I think I could easily knit right-handed using the English
style, but Continental is so much faster!” -Kathy, accounting

“I resolve to learn how to do more than just a basic stitch.  Purls here I
come!” -Alisha, marketing

“My
knitting resolution for 2011 is to knit more! The key to this is teaching my
toddler not to grab at my needles and tug at my knitting whenever I
try to knit around her.” -Melissa, creative consultant

“Resolve
to make myself not be so lazy and do swatches so I can make sure I have the
right gauge so things will
turn out the right size.”-Teri, purchasing

“I
would like to actually knit a few pairs of SpillyJane’s mitten rather than just
talking about how much I love them. I’ll start with the cupcakes and then the hedgehogs. I noticed
that SpillyJane has fingerless mitts versions. That is perfect! Now, where did
I put my Palette stash?”
-Kelley, Knit Picks owner
