Knit & Crochet in Public Week: Finishing What You Start

Ever since I committed to learning crochet, I’ve found myself trading in my needles for hooks more often than not. So for me, this year’s Knit & Crochet in Public week has been all about returning to my first (and sadly unfinished!) crochet project.

Say “Hello!” to my pile of 140+ crocheted circles; all waiting patiently to become the Hexagon How-To Blanket by Lucy of Attic24!

Hexagon1

I had first decided on the Hexagon How-To because it used a few simply stitches, just enough for me to get comfortable with crochet. Needles to say, soon after I got the hang of how to crochet these small circles, it quickly became a complete obsession for me. After a few weeks, I finally ran out of yarn (and apparently motivation to move onto the next step)!

Although this seemingly unimpressive grid of crocheted circles seems manageable at first – it can get a bit overwhelming when you realize that each little tower is a stack of 14 or 16 other circles.

Hexagon2

And yes, those are all ends you see sticking out. I know, I should have been taking breaks and doing a bit of finishing here and there. But I just couldn’t stop making these addictive circles! So now, it is time for me to take back the hexagon and get started on finishing this blanket.

I used the very nice and sunny weather here this weekend as the perfect opportunity to do a bit of public crocheting! I took my (huge) stash of circles down to the waterfront, enjoyed the weather, and got started on the hexagon borders.

I used some of the special buy Chroma Worsted that we had around Cyber Monday. After having this project in hiding for so long, I completely forgot how much I loved this color! I’m using Chroma Worsted in Natural for the hexagon borders and I really like how it’s turning out.

Who knew it would just take a bit of crocheting in public (paired with the guilt/shame of ignoring this project for so long!) to refuel my enthusiasm? Either way, I’m happy to report that my Hexagon blanket it back on track and so it my motivation!

Where did you crochet or knit in public this week?

I love those colors and the pattern. I don’t crochet… I hardly knit (beginner for sure) but these are inspiration! Post the finished blanket… so I rev my engine! Mag

I have a bag full of these little gems just waiting for the right moment for me to be finished with all my “other” projects. I’m pretty sure I picked the same Ravelry pattern too!

    Fabulous color choice.

At least you can crochet over your ends in successive rounds, to avoid having to weave them all in like in knitting (yeah, yeah, I know you can ‘knit in’ ends, too, but it’s a much bigger pain than doing something similar in crochet). 🙂

I fear this just inspired me to start something new.

I’ve been looking for a new project – something simple to sit with in front of the TV in the cold nights (living in Cape Town) and this fits the bill! I’m going to temporarily abandon all my ‘unfinished’s’ and go for this. Thank you!

I love the colors you used for this! Was this a different type of yarn all together from the border?

Hi Jessie, Yes – I used Chroma Worsted in Natural for the hexagon borders and the actual circles are in a different color of Chroma.

What color Chroma are you using for your hexagons?

Hi Susan, I used a one-time color of Chroma Worsted that was available as a special buy for Cyber Monday last year, though I think just about any color of Chroma would look pretty great!
