This week’s Burnished interview series features the lovely and very talented Hilary Smith Callis! Hilary is part of the IDP program, but her designs have also been a part of past Knit Picks exclusive collections. So naturally, we were thrilled when we first saw her Burnished design – the Poua Pullover knitting pattern. Take a peek at Hilary’s workspace and learn more about her inspiration, must-have tools and more!

design inspiration: modern, wearable whimsy

must-have workspace tools: a blocking space, a basket for yarns and needles I’m working with at the moment, lots of filing methods, and a desk big enough to spread everything out.

absolute favorite fiber: wool, always and forever.

current color crush: I’ve always had a thing for lime green.

top down or bottom up: top down — I’ll never make a too-short sweater again.

Hilary lives in San Francisco, where a lack of summer and abundance of fog mean she can wear woolen handknits all year long. By day she works on an infrared observatory at NASA and by night, tries to turn all the ideas in her head into knitted reality. You can read her ongoing knitting epic, The Yarniad, and see more of her designs there.
