Under the Sea Mobile Pattern from KnitPicks.com
Favorite Baby Patterns

I love all things small - little bunnies, little cupcakes, little gnomes, and of course - little humans! Spring is the celebration of new life, so I rounded up a few of my favorite baby patterns.

Baby Knits!

Our new Knits for Everybody collection couldn't have come at a better time! My sister is about to have a baby in November which means that I immediately threw out my old queue of knitting projects and cast on for every baby project I could think of. Now, it's been a long time since I've been around a baby and it's hard to remember how absolutely teeny tiny they are when they're brand new. Instead of winging it and just guesstimating the size of a newborn baby, I turned to Knits for Everybody to help me find just the right size!

Staff Projects – Kid Things!

In the heat of summer, the staff here at Knit Picks have been busy knitting things for babies and kids. Whether it's older patterns in new yarn colorways, or favorite yarns knit up in creative ways, this crop of baby knits made me want to upscale each one, for myself. See what you think!

Staff Projects – Bunny Knits!

Spring is almost over - can you believe it? Only about a month to go until summer, and I don't know if I'm ready quite yet. The weather in the Northwest has been everything from 50 to 90 degrees already, giving us a sample of what looks to be the hot summer ahead. So to keep spring around for just a bit longer (at least in my mind, and on my needles) I made some sweater for my daughters. Want to see?

Staff Projects: Winging It, For Our Kids

So much of parenting is just figuring it out as you go along, right? In keeping with that idea, Alison and I have recently been crafting without patterns - just "winging it", as we do in some form with our young kids each and every day. I hesitated about posting these projects, only because we get a lot of questions about our staff projects: what patterns we used, if/where we altered the pattern, how much yarn we used, and if that yarn still available. These three projects are an amalgamation of elements that came together without a specific plan, but I wanted to show you them anyway. Sometimes it's the spontaneous things we create that turn out to be the most unique, don't you think? First up, is this watermelon slice that Alison made from our newest yarn, Tuff Puff. She used under 5 skeins of Pucker, 2 skein of Macaw, and 1 skein each of White and Black. Alison would like to report that she has aspirations for writing up this pattern, but would like to change how she did the decreases. In the meantime, she says her 1 year-old daughter will enjoy belly flopping on it, immensely. Job done!

Back to school with the Knit Picks Team

In celebration of our new (free!) downloadable e-booklet "Back to School Knits", I asked the team here at Knit Picks to bring me their favorite school photos. I love school photos - they're moments that last forever, and don't the clothes you wear in them just bring you right back to that age? Here we are, in all our glory: From the top: Jenny, our Marketing Director in her first school photo living in this country!, Alison, our fearless leader, in her favorite apple dress, Kim, our Design Director, whose freckles are killing me, Holly (that's me!) - Can you tell it was the 80s? I loved Dorothy Hamill and Annie, passionately, Hannah, our Catalog Director - school photos in the Northwest involved flower baskets! and Emily, our Graphic Designer. Those sleeves! Truly, a classic. We all agreed on 2 things: We all look the same now as we did back in the day. There's just something in your features that just never changes. It makes me so intrigued as to what my children will look like when they grow up! Also, whether you grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, the bowl haircut is always in fashion. Always. Do you have any great stories of school photo day? Do tell in comments!

Back to School Knits – Free Patterns Available Now!

Great news! There's a new collection of patterns available for children ages 4-12, and they're free! It's no secret that I love knitting for kids. It's been a passion of mine before I even had kids. I used to knit for every kid I knew. I was browsing patterns one day, and I saw a photo of a child on school picture day, in his favorite handknit sweater. Suddenly, I had an idea to design a few patterns inspired by school motifs: penmanship paper, composition books, and the humble yellow pencil.

Staff Projects: Comfy Babies!

Baby and children's garments are popular staff knits here at Knit Picks. They offer a quick knit, not much shaping, and are so very satisfying to give to a new mom, or your own kiddo. When Comfy Worsted Heathers came into the office, Alison and Hannah took no time at all casting on for some great cotton garments that are sure to look great on some sweet small people they know. Hannah went down to a size 2 needle and used 1 skein each of Comfy Worsted Heathers in Ripple Heather and Finnley Heather to make her Puerperium Cardigan (free pattern HERE). I love how subtle and beautiful the stripes look in heathered colors, and the side buttons will make this one easy to get on and off a newborn!
