The Knit Picks Winter Book Sale is the perfect opportunity to celebrate surviving the holidays. In other words, we’re at great time to dive deep into some serious crafting. Whether your New Year’s resolutions involve learning new skills, finishing old projects, or just dedicating more time to the crafts you love, we have a book for you. And with the Winter Book Sale, you can treat yourself to a special gift at 40% off! Here’s just a sampling of some of the wonderful books we adore that you’ll find on sale.

Nice and New

If you’re ready to challenge yourself with a big project, The Joy of Color is a perfect choice. The book is a distillation of a long term Design Your Own Fair Isle workshop, but without the expense! This is not a project book of patterns, but step-by-step instructions on creating your own Fair Isle motifs, based on a wide range of styles, and designing just the sweater you want. But sometimes getting in more knitting time means finding small, delightful projects that require less thinking and more doing. Pretty Knitted Hands delivers this in spades. With a spectrum of hand patterns ranging from stranded Winter mittens to lacy Summer wristlets, you’ll have no problem finding the perfect little project all year round.

Though they haven’t been around long enough to accrue the numbers of our staples, these two books have attracted an impressive amount of attention in just a short while. The Big Book of Knitted Mittens showcases a gallery of the most delightfully colorful hand knits in the distinctive tradition and style of Scandinavian design. Or indulge in the entirely different, but no less distinct, style of Curls 2, which has attracted quite a following with it’s combination of no-fuss-knitting and no-fuss-wearing shawls.

Longterm Bestsellers

The Book Sale is the perfect opportunity to pick up those books that keep drawing attention even after they’re no longer shiny and new. Mittens of Latvia, as much a work of ethnography and craft history, is an encyclopedia of 178 traditional designs. Though no actual instructions are included, every design includes photographs and charts, with notes on different construction techniques. But if you’re looking for less of an exhaustive historical registry, you might find in The Knitter’s Handy Book of Top Down Sweaters the simple, straightforward instruction that so many others have enjoyed. The 15  patterns from top designers are the perfect resource for your first sweater or an easy start to that longer project you’ve been looking for.

Other Yarn Crafts

If you’re interested in exploring a new craft or are already a dedicated weaver or crocheter, you can find just as much to be happy about as any knitter. Modern Weaving gives comprehensive instruction for a variety of intriguing techniques, from modern color patterns to innovative textural creations. And you won’t find granny squares in Crochet in Black & White, but rather a host of chic, fashion forward crochet patterns from home decor to stylish accessories.

Random and Delightful

In addition to expanding your library of stitch dictionaries, pattern collections, and technique books, the Book Sale also affords the perfect excuse to indulge your whimsy. I Dream of Yarn is a wonderful, meditative yarn- and knitting-themed coloring book. Or try the picture book fable of best friends Cat and Yarn, Cat Knit. Either one is sure to bring out your inner knitting child. Just two of the delightful oddities that will complement your yarn habit perfectly.

Just a thought……I prefer to call knitting projects ART, not CRAFT,
