12 Weeks of Gifting – Free Caterpillar Shawlette Pattern

It’s Week 3 of our  12 Weeks of Gifting! As a big fan of colorful sock yarns, I sometimes find it hard to find a lace pattern that will not get lost in the different hues. So you can image my delight when the lovely Joyce Fassbender sent along her newest pattern – The Caterpillar Shawlette, our free pattern for the week!

Free Shawlette Pattern - Caterpillar Shawlette from knitpicks.com

This beautiful shawl is perfect for yarns like Chroma Twist – the intriguing stitch pattern uses both simple cables and intermediate lace that stand out, rather than getting lost in the striping colors. While this might not fall under the “easy” category, once you start knitting, you’ll never want to stop. If you are looking for a fabulous holiday gift knit, you can’t go wrong with this – it only uses one skein of fingering weight yarn!

I agree with the knitters who state that the charts and the number of stitches don’t add up/. If I follow Chart 1 I end up with 23 stitches, not 33 at the end of row 12. I also don’t understand how to increase by 48 stitches per row on Chart 2. I have been knitting for over 50 years so I consider myself experienced and yet I have never seen such poor and confusing instructions. I have started this shawlette over many times only to have to rip rip it out and start over again in frustration. I tried reaching out to the designer for more explicit instructions but did not receive a reply. I truly believe at this point that she truly doesn’t want anyone else to make this shawlette which is a shame because it is a beautiful shawlette that I really wanted to make for a special person as a Xmas gift.

I may be mistaken, but I believe there is an error in Chart 1, line 5. There aren’t enough stitches to perform the k2tog, right & left twist, then ssk. I always end up two stitches short. Lovely pattern so I’m compensating by just knitting the k2tog & ssk. But the twists are tricky so maybe it’s just me! Thanks for the pattern!

I don’t understand Somme of the directions. I’ve got the two set up rows but after that the chart doesn’t make any sense. If anyone has some pointers to help. I would appreciate that. I got the two garter stitches on the side but it doesn’t make any sense after that. The stitches don’t add up on the chart. Please help!

Hi Janice, we hope we can help. The pattern says: Odd numbered rows are worked as: K2 (top edge sts), work chart, K1 (center st), work chart again, K2 (top edge sts). Even numbered rows are worked as: K2, work chart, P1 (center st), work chart again, K2.
So you should have 9 sts on your needles after the set up rows. For the first row, you knit your 2 garter sts, work the chart, K1, then work the chart again, then knit the remaing stitches. So the first row would be K2, YO, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, YO, K2. That will give you 13 sts.

Please be more specific on what technique was used for the M1 in the set up rows. I struggled and finally put my yarn and needles away for this project. YO?, kf&b? Pick up from row below….tried them all and count just doesn’t work.

Hi Marge, we’re sorry for any confusion. We used the M1 increase (http://tutorials.knitpicks.com/make-1-increase/). If you are having problems with that, you can always knit one row, then start the setup rows.

Wow, beautiful shawl. I enlarge charts for easier reading and have recently gotten hooked on charts. The Knit Pick magnetic pattern holder is super with charts. So much easier than written patterns. Thanks so much!

Thank you for the free patterns, but I struggle seeing charts. Please give some with full written directions?
    Thanks
